Can't load any patches made with older versions of Komplete Kontrol

Hello all,

I recently discovered upon trying to open backups of older projects (spanning ~4 years of music) that all of my KK patches (made with KK2) have been reset to just a blank instrument window—no instrument, no dialog window asking about missing plugins. I figured this was due to the upgrade, uninstalled KK3, and downgraded to KK2.9.6 as many support threads have suggested but the problem persists.

I am not sure since you have already had KK 3.x.x installed but part of the issue could be that you have used KK 2.x.x as a VST2 plugin earlier and that KK 3.x.x only comes as VST3. At least check if you are using the right VST version !

This sounds as if you are using a DAW which is probably mot inconsequential with respect to your problem.

Are these "backups of older projects (spanning ~4 years of music)" made by using a DAW ? In case then which DAW were these projects made using ? And what are you trying to open projects with now ? Where the projects made using same hardware/OS platform or what hardware and OS did you use then ?

What DAW (in the older projects)? What instruments were present?

And "older" can mean VST2 as well - more detail is needed.

The projects were made using Tracktion Waveform, the oldest ones with 11 and the newer ones with 12. They are the original project folders that I had copied to OneDrive, which were usually sufficient to restore the state of the project in the past before I updated KK. Most of the projects were made in Windows 11, with the oldest ones made in Windows 10 on an older computer, but I experience the same problem with projects that I made on the same computer.

I have tried opening the projects in both DAW versions with the same result. As for what instruments were present—I don't know because they aren't loaded anymore. Likely a mix of Kontakt instruments (Mark I Scarbee, Hybrid Keys, Session Horns, etc.) and third party plugins (bx_oberhausen, UJAM plugins). From what I can tell I was using the VST3 version of KK.

Hmm…lots going on here - especially the Onedrive part - which is concerning. Onedrive cannot (and will not) backup all file types. Some types are restricted, some are just ignored but I do not trust it for any "point in time" backup scenario.

That said - in all my experience with KK v2.9.6 - dating back to Fall 2020 when I first got my S61 MKII - I have yet to encounter any issues loading old projects - and I have had two complete DAW builds in that time - both using different versions of Studio One. But instrument availability is critical.

Without specific knowledge on exactly which instruments are in play - this may be simply the fact that the instrument that WAS in the old project - is not installed anymore and KK is loading up empty.

This may be one for NI support to assist with…

I believe most of the instruments I mentioned are still installed on my machine and available for use in KK, except for bx_oberhausen and other Brainworx/plugin alliance products (I had trouble with them repeatedly deactivating my machine and depleting plugin activations when dual booting Linux). I would expect at least some of them to still load.

Well - something is not happening over there and there is only so much that can be done here on the forums.

If you are loading from OneDrive then try copying to a place on the PC that is not synced with OneDrive and then open from there.

Do you also have N.I. libraries or content or VST installed on OneDrive or folders synced with OneDrive ? (that has also been seen)

when dual booting Linux

Are any of the N.I. libraries or content or VST installed on drives that are shared with more OS ?

What is the file system used for N.I. libraries , content , VST and projects ?

Also : Have you acquired / taken full ownership of all files, folders, drives and destinations prior to use ? Even if you made a new user with exactly same name as before then you do not automatically inherit Windows file , folder or drive permissions of old user…

Yes, I did copy the files off of OneDrive before attempting to open them. I don't have any instrument libraries or content installed on OneDrive. I don't dual boot Linux any more, but when I did it was off an external SSD. I did mount D: in Linux to access files on it occasionally. All of my NI software is installed between C: and D: which are both using NTFS. I have been trying to open the projects off my D: drive.

The ownership of the copy I'm working with was under my Windows account (which seemed to be tied to the outlook email) but I've changed it to my actual user account under Security. However this doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.

I submitted a support ticket to NI but have received no response thus far.

Thank you for the information. Nothing really springs to my mind then, I am not a DAW expert and least of all with respect to Tracktion Waveform.

N.I. Support do not work weekends , but you ought to receive a response within a few workdays, otherwise then ask forum Customer Care (Jeremy_NI) to check on the delay.
