DAW controls no longer work after firmware v2 update

I've recently updated my S88 keyboard firmware to the latest version 2. The update went as planned, no errors reported and the update was reported as successful.

However, after rebooting everything, the DAW lights no longer come on and the S88 is no longer able to control my Cubase 14 DAW.

I have rechecked that the Hardware connection Service is up to date and Native access reports that it is v2.0.6. All other apps and libraries in Native access are also up to date.

Cubase was already up to date before hand.

Everything worked perfectly before the firmware update.

Any ideas what to do to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, so this shows that the device isn't connecting to the hardware connection service. Any luck with the log files? Can you try using a different usb c cable? Can you try uninstalling and reinstalling hardware connection service in native access?

Okay, reinstalling Hardware connection service through Native access did the job. The browser light now comes on in both Cubase and the standalone app and I can browse libraries.

Thank you both for spending your time to solve this problem. I can now get one with some actual music. 😁🙏

Hi thanks for starting the thread here.

Can you confirm in Windows task manager that NI hardware connection service is running? And if so can you confirm on the keyboard in settings > general that you see agent version: 2.0.6, and usb host connected: yes?

Also, you should see a js file inside your user Documents/Steinberg/Cubase folder (under NativeInstruments/...) can you please confirm this?

Finally, inside Cubase what do you see if you open the midi remote manager? Do you see anything in the midi controllers tab? In the scripts tab, do you see a script for the Kontrol S MK3 with NI as the vendor?

As timrae_NI indirectly suggests then if you have not done so already then you should also update the Hardware Connection Service in Native Access to latest version (V. 2.0.6) using latest version of Native Access for your OS.

Yes, the NI hardware connection service is running in task manager.

The agent version appears to be blank??? see image

There should be a .js file in Local/NativeInstruments (with no space between the e and the I). Can you take another look? The .json file is something else and that's what you're seeing in the midi remote list (note how it says created by Andy)

A blank agent version means the device isn't connected to the hardware connection service, which may also be a problem.

What if you instead open Komplete Kontrol standalone ? or if you open Kontakt 8 stand alone ? Does the keyboard communicate with the app ? (Does it change away from Default Midi Template ?)

The S88 works okay as a keyboard in Cubase in that it plays notes, records etc. It's just the DAW buttons on the S88 that are not lit and don't work. See image previously uploaded.

OK thank you, first of all could you please check the log files below for any error messages? Hopefully there will be a hint here about what's causing this problem.

C:\Windows\Temp\NIHardwareConnectionService.log

Also, do you have any anti virus software that might have quarantined the .js file? The Hardware Connection Service is supposed to copy the .js file to the Cubase folder when it runs, so would be great to figure out why that hasn't happened here.

However to get things working for you ASAP, you should be able to manually copy the .js file yourself. Please go to the following folder on your computer:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Native Instruments\Hardware\Hardware Connection Service

There should be a folder in there called NativeInstruments which has a .js file in it.

Copy this folder into your Cubase DriverScripts\Local folder you showed above (i.e. you should now have a "NativeInstruments" folder next to the other "Native Instruments" folder) and then restart Cubase.

Play is not enough , can you browse the instruments on the keyboard using the standalone apps ? (that's why I asked if it changed away from the Default Midi)(See image previously uploaded)

Did you check Komplete Kontrol standalone Midi settings ? (tick box settings)

Did you check that the keyboard is set to Midi 1 ? How to Switch a Kontrol S-Series MK3 Keyboard to MIDI 1.0

Did you double check DAW midi settings ?

The log file doesn't seem to exist. I copied the address into windows explorer and it can't find it.

I'm only running window antivirus

I've copied the folder across and some functionality has returned. Play, record, stop all work, but the browse is still unlit.
