best method to remove background music from dialog

Hello,

Semi newbie working with a backstage interview at a bar or club with reasonably loud background music. I'm trying to isolate the dialog/remove music. I've tried Dialogue Isolate, Deconstruct, Spectral De-noise, and Music Rebalance. So far Music Rebalance seems to have the best results. I'd assume Dialogue Isolate would be best.

Question: when I tested with Spectral Repair, it removed all of the dialog, leaving only the music. Isn't there a way to reverse-phase or subtract the music from the dialog by having this music-only track?

I added the music-only track to the beginning of the original track and used Spectral De-noise to Learn the section of the new track with removed dialog, and rendered the complete track, which had fair results.

Is Music Rebalance the best module to use for this situation?

Any help is much appreciated.

I've been doing this kind of thing (and had good results) using stem separation in DJ software. Using RX the equivalent would be Music Rebalance, muting everything except the "vocals".

Usually the more buried the voice is (behind the music), the poorer the results generally.

I'd suggest trying stem separation in VirtualDJ (it's free for home use).

I am not very experienced with RX myself but if you have a MP3 example file with some music with inconsequential conversation then I don't mind running some trials of my own. Mind you , I am not that skilled and can not guarantee it worth your trouble…

Thanks for your reply and Virtual DJ suggestion. If I have go the stem separation route, I might try something a little more powerful like LA LA AI, or Hit N Mix. I'll check VDJ since it's free.

I think that the iZotope software is amazing tools even though as you indirectly suggests then it takes some learning to 'master' , I will even say that if you are new to the tools then it can take a lot of studying 🙂

If you're willing to tinker with different modules, that would be great. I just didn't want you wasting your time since you said you aren't that familiar with RX. Yes, I have a long ways to go and being a slow learner doesn't help. I've had to re-watch a few of the instructional videos.

I am working with RX 11 Advanced. I'm hoping you also have RX 11 Advanced due to some modules that aren't available in Standard.

I'll edit together a short mp3 clip and post.

Yes , I am lucky enough to have the Advanced version at my disposal 🙂
