For that you need to make a MIDI template for it

To use Plugins as 'standalone' then use a VST host such as Freestyle. There is a Freestyle demo but the download can be rather hard to spot (says Demo to the left on product page) so here is a link to the download page. Another VST host is Gig Performer. (Gig Performer also has a 'lite' version that can be had when buying from a partner shop).

I can not vouch for any of products I mentioned above here nor can I vouch for the accuracy of the article referred to.

What I mean by standalone, I am referring without a computer... I just want to turn on my M+ and start banging out

No, only specific NI plugins operate in M+. FM8, Monarch, Prism and Massive and Reaktor. Standard VST's from other manufacturers do not work.
