Battery 4 (lack of) development
Hi folks,
Is NI ever going to update Battery 4? Battery was one of the main reasons I bought Komplete, I love its simple & fast workflow, but… it looks and works like a 20-year old piece of software (15 years to be precise.)
GUI isn't resizable, the onboard reverb is awful, the file browser is ******, it frequently forgets where the samples stored are for my kits, it's too easy to accidentally swap the sample on a pad and there's no "undo" function…
It feels like NI has ditched Battery development, (maybe because DAWs are implementing their own native samplers?) but Battery's is so simple & fast to use. I, for one, would LOVE to see an update.
Is anyone else with me on this?

Battery discussions pops up from time to time , example : Battery 4 development
Subject of Battery is also touched over in the October 2024 – a community update from our Chief Product Officer , for starters then the CPO says specifically about Battery that , quote :
I know many of you are waiting for an update to Battery 4 – yes, it’s not yet even Sonoma compatible. Battery is built on some older code that’s been non-trivial to upgrade. Our teams have been focused on making Kontakt 8 the best it can be, but now that it has been released, we’ll release an update to Battery 4 in the coming weeks.
The rest of that thread ought also have more references to Battery.

Thank you for the info, I had not seen the October update. Good to know an update is coming, but disappointing that this entails bug fixes only, and no development of the product. Oh well…

@PoorFellow I hope collapsable tags is on the list of things to do, because there being so many tags now makes the sample list so tiny it's nearly unusable. The list shrinks down to a single line, haha.

I wish that I were able to assist better but alas as a Moderator I am in more ways in same position as a user (since that is what I am , a user with Moderator abilities not a N.I. employee, and with rather limited access to more information than other 'users').
However what I could do were to add the tag 'Feature Request' to your original thread which I then did just now, though not really sure if that will help in any way.

We have just shipped an update to Battery 4. It is already available in Native Access 2, although it may take longer to populate download servers worldwide. If you don't see it, keep refreshing!
Changelog is as follows:

- FIXED “Missing Samples” window was not triggered in some situations
- FIXED Skipping “Missing Sample” could cause cells to remain blank
- FIXED Komplete Kontrol crashes Logic Pro X when closed if hosting Battery
- FIXED Project file including Battery instances increases in size every time it is saved (Cubase)
- FIXED Moving cell broken after missing sample has been relocated
- FIXED Vintage Sampler MP60/SP1200 modes do not affect output (Logic, Standalone)
- FIXED Saved kit missing from user section in browser after resave

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for the info. As welcome as bug fixes are, what's the point if NI isn't going to keep the product up to date? Battery is a great bit of kit, but it has some serious issues and it looks (and sounds) like an antique next to other software on the market. Battery 4 was one of the main reasons I bought Komplete, but sadly I've stopped using it and started to use more modern alternatives.0 -
It's better to do something, than nothing, and to start somewhere, than not at all.

Does that mean there will be a proper update in the future? That would be most welcome.

Battery is like the rest of the old NI guard (Reaktor, FM8 etc) - in permanent maintenance mode now.
Expect only bug fixes and OS specific tweaks to ensure compatibility.
Best not to hold out hope for anything more.
This new maintenance release is very welcome and gets Battery a few more years of use.

I can't say anything will be out soon.
But I do think people will be pleasantly surprised by some of the products coming over the next 1-2 years.

I'd say I'm really happy I can start using Battery again now :) Thanks @Matthew_NI

You're very welcome! But I'm just the messenger - I'll pass this thanks on to the team of which I am a part.

While I appreciate the work to update Battery 4 I'm not exactly thrilled that it took 2 years to fix the major bugs preventing me from using it to it's full potential.
Hopefully no new bugs were introduced.
