Kontrol MK3 - Mapping Macros
I just bought a Kontrol S61 MK3 to replace my Panorama P6 and I seem to be missing something. Everything works okay with Kontakt and Komplete Kontrol, but if I open any plugin outside of them, it just says "Generic Controller", and when I map any macros to the knows, they work but don't say anything on the controller, just "cc". So is this thing useless outside of Kontakt and Komplete Kontrol? Probably going to return it if so.

It's designed to be used with KK and Kontakt and for 3rd party plugins there are many libraries that have all the presets fully mapped so as to not have to do it yourself.
The unfortunate thing with the MK3 is it was released while still clearly in development and many things (like more flexible MIDI setups) is non-existent and still needs to be added back in. All we can do is endlessly wait and see if anything actually happens. 10 years so far hasn't really yielded much but who knows, could rain gold tomorrow.

MIDI is only one way so mapping a knob using MIDI learn will not change the text on the keyboard in any keyboard, not just Kontrol, without some sort of intermediary wrapper (like Komplete Kontrol or Novation Automap). When MIDI 2 is a thing it will but that is not fully implemented by most hosts yet. The whole point of Komplete Kontrol is that is where you get the pre mapped macros and text display showing you what params are being used.
The only exception is Bitwig which has an extension which allows for more dynamic mapping

Weird. The only other keyboard I've used was the Nektar Panorama, and it did change the text for the knows. I just assumed it was a standard thing on all midi controllers

I think the Nectar has a lot of DAWS and plugins pre mapped like with Komplete Kontrol - they also have Nectarine

Which DAW do you use? I ask as there's third party scripts out there for Cubase, Reaper and Bitwig which uses the mixer pages for plugin/parameter mapping, sends and other commands - and they work great.
