How do you setup your orchestra?

I only do truly large orchestra arrangements intermittently and generally use some of the older 8DIO libraries when I do. But the reality is the best representations of full orchestras is most easily done section by section on different tracks. If NI solves this for me at the quality level of 8DIO sampling, I'm all in.

A bit of a different situation here but it may relate.

I use Live with several stems, with a project on a mobile storage. My session has something around 10GB with both WAVs and MP3s and different sample rates (44/48). Live usually takes sometime making audio buffers in the host computer. If you're using the same computer, this time gets down to a minimum, but it always makes buffers.

When it's a new computer, or you have new stems, or you recently cleaned you buffers, load time is added and dependending on how much audio you have, or your computer speed, or your available space, it can easily take 10mins (or more).

    Hope it helps.

Kontakt 7 Factory Library has some really good sounds in it. Sometimes it sounds better to layer with other instruments, such as Session Strings.

I just recently purchased a 2TB M.2 and moved all my music stuff onto it. Is it best practice to move just my samples to another drive dedicated to them? Some plugins like Emergence Audio stuff still takes a minute or 2 to load. Would a dedicated drive help or is it just the nature of the beast of working with gigs of samples?

Upgraded my iMac with 2TB of internal SSD, plus 128gigs of RAM. Life is awesome since :) The internal SSD is so much better option compared to my Samsung T series SSDs. Pricey, but hey...just had to befriend a guy from an official Apple store haha!

I'm fairly new to production, I just use my Native Instruments to load it up then freeze the track so it does'nt overload my macbook pro. :)

Question: Should I buy a Midi keyboard controller or a full blown Keyboard synth? What do you think? I already know I want 73 keys.

A template with all the instruments, and all libraries in external ssd.

    Good luck everybody!

With Mac Studio and 128Gb RAM, I forgot that I needed any special preparation for music creation. An external SSD by Samsung T9 4Gb helps a lot, too.

I'm using an iMac 8-Core Intel i9, with 128GB of RAM (and yes, RAM matters, and yes, I have projects that take more than 64 GB actually).

4 SSDs (7 TB total for virtual instruments (orchestral ones take the most part), and a 4 TB Raid 0 (2x 2TB) Thunderbolt HDD for my projects and some other virtual instruments.

I'm using Nuendo as my main DAW, 3 Stream Decks and an iPad (with homemade profiles, optimized for use within Nuendo as well as all my Kontakt (and other) libraries quickly and efficiently.

I made a huge orchestral template, but I also made many "track presets", for some jobs where I don't need the full template.

I won't go too far on how I work (it'll take too much time), but I do layer a lot, mostly with big sections such as strings, brass, and woodwinds, and I can use different Kontakt library blends depending on the color/thickness/intention I want to get for a specific piece.

I do have a few physical modelling synths. Haven't really gotten to deep into them yet. Curiosity Piqued.

I i tested my 4 disk enclosure (with high speed data cable) and the transfer speed difference between my it and my internal disks was actually negligible. Not saying that there is a speed issue, but if there were, this info suggests, my only bottleneck at the moment would be my mobo.

Didn't realize there was a track freeze option in Live, I guess it's that activation button on the channel strip?

If you purge then save your project, the next time it loads, it will load as a project with purged samples in the instances of Kontakt?

    If so, that's a great idea!!! 😎
