Kontrol 2024 outlook: what was, what now, what next?

I really appreciate the roadmap, and the ongoing communication from NI to let us know how it’s going and answer questions. I still love my S49 mk1, but I’ve been wanting to move up to a 61 key keyboard for years, and had to skip the mk2 because the MIDI templates were too limited and couldn’t replace my mk1. I’m really looking forward to getting a mk3…just waiting on MIDI template editing, and I’m glad to hear it’s in the works.
Other than the extra octave, the big display, poly AT, and continuous pedal support will be really nice upgrades.
I do have some concerns about Komplete Kontrol v3, but they’ve already been voiced by others and (thanks to this thread) I know NI has heard these concerns. I’m optimistic that they’ll address these pain points over time.
All in all, I like the direction things are going and feel good about buying another piece of NI hardware and continuing to use it as a central part of my music-making setup.

You're onto something! You can be on my strategic planning board. Toledo won't even see the archers, and Cleveland will just think the elephants' footsteps are just earthquake aftershocks coming out of New Jersey. But we'll mitigate that by debarking the elephants from ships coming down from Port Huron into Lake Erie. Maybe Loraine would be a good staging area. Don't they have rail going through the old auto plants in Loraine?
Now all that's left is to find somebody in Port Huron who has elephants...
And Native Instruments...I hope you're working with your vendors at Heavyocity, SonicCouture, or Cinesamples...you know, getting the War Elephant Library ready for Kontakt 7! If you need any field recordings, just hit us up! 🐘

Just read the initial roadmap/post.
I wish all developers/manufacturers were this transparent and thoughtful. Thank you.
Fingers crossed for an announcement on the Maschine Mk4 (or whatever is next for Maschine). Maybe Superbooth…?
Much success to everyone. 🙂

I would really love for SonicCouture to update their libraries to NKS 2.0 this year. They do such incredible work.
Same for Spitfire. Same for Crowhill and the likes

What I'm more concerned about is, when will MPE achieve full support and coverage? The MPE promised in the promotional video is the direct reason for me to buy MK3. I want to know how we can implement the custom parameters of MPE, for example, build a related parameter in Kontakt? Hope you are getting better and better

I agree. EVERY sample library maker out there who uses NKS should should SHOULD be telling their users about their OWN NKS 2.0 plans for this summer. SHOULD.

We support Polyphonic Aftertouch. This is not exactly the same thing as MPE.
Polyphonic Aftertouch, as a feature of the keyboard, sends out this pressure data.
It is up to the content to which you're connected to make use of the pressure data, not the keyboard itself.
Kontakt can receive and use this pressure data, and many recent and/or recently refreshed instruments do.
Are you asking from an end user perspective, or an instrument builder perspective?

Thanks for the updates. I am considering purchasing the MKiii 88 but would like to know if generates CC 88 data for high resolution MIDI. I use this feature with my current controller and Pianoteq. Thank you.

It does not yet. It could, with an update.
As of now, we publish our MIDI 2 capabilities to other MIDI 2 devices when they query us. We can also send and receive MIDI 2 compatible messages.
Some additional capabilities of MIDI 2, including High Resolution Parameter Control, and Capability Discovery, are capabilities we can add with an update, because the hardware is compatible and ready.
When we do that work is a question of time -> we are waiting for more widespread and robust support for MIDI 2 from the DAW and Operating System manufacturers.

I wonder how much of the MPE spec a traditional keyboard could really support. I guess the only real example at the moment of a trad style keyboard that supports both Poly At and MPE is the Hydrasynth (Osmose is sort of traditional in looks but not action). As far as I know Hydrasynth can switch between PolyAT and MPE but not use both at the same time because they are so different and in practice you don't really get the multiple dimensions of MPE that something like a Seaboard can do as the keys don't have built in sensors to pick up on vertical and horizontal slides (whereas the Osmose does). So if the MkIII did have MPE support it would at most be support for the standard but not all of the actual performance features - you would still get poly pressure and per note automation (I guess) but no slides etc. (Incidentally, originally MPE stood for 'multidimensional polyphonic expression', it was only changed to 'MIDI polyphonic expression' when it was adsorbed into the modernised MIDI spec which really leaves out that important aspect)
On a side note how many DAWS can actually record and edit Poly aftertouch data? Many seem to have gone the MPE support route but left out Poly Aftertouch editing (eg Reaper)

I’m pretty sure In Studio One you can record and edit Poly aftertouch

Thanks for the response.

Apparently the users of mk2 and mk1 are of little value to them.

Totally not so ! , Quote Matthew_NI Product Team , 2024-03-13
The MK2 user base is by far our largest active hardware user base. The MK2 users are also a significant consumer of our NKS software. I genuinely don't think people realize quite how large these communities are, given how familiar we become with one another's names on this forum. Even in our wildest dreams, it will take years for MK3 to reach similar user counts. Of course we build new products capable of new things. But it would be extremely bad for morale and for business if we left our largest user base behind.

I didn't see the Instruments splash screen in Arturia either. I had to turn off silent installs in the arturia software centre, and reinstall the plugins. Take for example cs80 plug in. I went to arturia software centre, turned off silent install, reinstalled the plugin full install with everything ticked, then the image splash screen appeared. I did this with all the arturia plugins and they all appeared after a restart. Test on one and see if it works, if it does do them all :)
