"Presets" vs. "Snapshots" – difference(s)?

Awesome explanation, now it makes way more sens! If I may ask, do you got any tips for organising the user library? Specifically in a situation where i'd like to frequently back up all of my sounds (preset/snapshot) between 2 computers
Are you able to get EVERYTHING in a main "parent" folder?
Since KK doesnt ask where to save the snapshot (it forces you here : C:\Users\Documents\Native Instruments\User Content).
I guess it would be a matter of bringing all of the other preset in that location (as saving sound as from vst allow you to pick location)
Thanks

Agreed, once you know that the preset is actually a snapshot, it's fine! How do you organise your own user library if I may ask? Leave everything default by NI or a structure of your own?
Thanks

For Kontakt i leave them as they are. I never even made any user presets so far. This is because i make a very limited use of it, only for specific purposes.
For NKS presets, Komplete Kontrol, Maschine, Reaktor and all VST Plugins i always create my own structures, however, i leave the Factory presets as they are.
For example, i never use the default location "C:\Users\your_name\Documents\Native Instruments\User Content" (or similar locations for other software).
Instead, i use for everything an external drive (D:\Studio) and inside it separate sub-folders (NKS Library, Reaktor Library, Cubase Projects, Audio Samples etc. etc.) and inside those sub-folders, a lot more sub-sub-folders, usually organized by Plugin name, or other types of structure in other cases.
In this way not only you will never loose anything, but you can take this drive and use it on any other computer (as long as it has, the same structure, same folder names and same user name!). You will have a "life time library", without the need to do any changes at all, apart of some sporadic updates or changes you want.
No more fear of system failures or format system drive or anything else ...and even on every new computer you get, if you follow the same process while you installing your software, your files will always be there. For extra security I always have a second disc, completely dedicated to backup and auto-update any change i do to the main drive (D:\Studio).

Wow nice, thats the dream indeed!! Though how exactly do you get around KK that forces you to save your snapshot in their default location? C:/documents/NI/usercontent?

It is forces me indeed!
So, i have to save there. However, after closing KK, i simply move the newly saved presets in my directory. 😉
Of course i have added the location "D:\Studio\NKS Library" in KK Preferences, at:
Libray --> User
and i always have enable the option "Scan user content for changes at start up", so, next time i open KK it find any new presets immediately.

Okay, that's what I thought you'd be doing. Sucks for the extra steps though. Upon doing further testing, i've noticed that saving sound from maschine allow the snapshot (nksn file) for a custom location.
As I don't mind using maschine to hold my sounds in stead of KK, that's probably what i'll be using !
Thanks for the help!

I always use Maschine to make NKS presets. More options, much more flexibility!
I hope that they will not destroy it on a future update... 🙄
