Has NI Lost It's Way?

I think trust has to be re-earned at this point. By fresh blood, I don't explicitly mean replacing people, it could just be a small panel of consultants like I said, not business people or external companies, real people, users. If you're making a keyboard for the love of god talk to Kymea, Jester, etc... in the early stages of development and brainstorming. If you're making a new standalone talk to Ozon, etc... Pay these people if you have to, if there's marketing budget to blast me with the same NI ads over and over on the web then there's certainly a few bucks for that. With that said, who Am I? Just another fool commenting online that never owned a big company, or maybe.. just maybe I could have a bit more insight than that, then again.. Everyone thinks they know what's best. 🤷♂️
To be devil's advocate for a second, much feedback has to be ignored because people often ask for ridiculous things, but that never happens from the experienced high post count people from this community that I've seen... I value some specific people's opinions way higher than others, if that's fair is debatable but to me, it's smart... some folks have earned my trust. It feels like NI trusts no one other than themselves.
Regarding monetization:
To me, that is the easiest problem to solve. Charge for extras, that could cover for ongoing development the same way the subscriptions that every company is chasing do. Akai's Stems is not free, it's 10$ and I bet my house that a large portion of the userbase will buy it, because they want it... Simple.
I'd pay for a better Sampler in Maschine, RT Timestetch, more advanced Piano Roll, better on screen feedback, tons of things, just like I pay for every Ableton update or my plugins.
Also, to you, it's may be irrelevant since you're not in the culture of collecting endless one-shots and 808's but expansions are a massive source of income, if NI makes them every other month it's because they sell well. AKAI has an Expansion equivalent aswell.
One of the reasons Expansions sell well is the difficulty of tagging and organizing things yourself, but with AI sorting gaining popularity they better hurry up and do something, or eventually someone will make a free auto tagger + people will realize how much better Splice content is and even that lake might dry out...

I guess that's a reality check for me then for the longer term strategy and future of NI.
Sounds damning if there are problems, but they don't understand that there are problems and aren't even equiped to deal with the problems, because they don't have a team team focused on the problems. If NI have really been this good for years and haven't improved much in all that time, then i've really been missing out. The M+ is what made me fall in love with NI again though and it's a relatively newish product that they have made into a masterpiece, at least to me who felt no real affection or desire to use my MK3 much. A company that can make such a quality and desirable product once, can surely do it again.
Speaking from the Maschine point of view then, I still have the rose tinted specs on.
Is it broken? No, not for me. In fact it's far from broken.
Is there anything better? Well, that's really subjective and it depends on the definition and perspective of the user concerned. More features doesn't always equate to better. A few focused features might make or break a deal in any number of directions, or even the price point might.
Can it be improved? Of course it can. There are lots of companies bringing new features out that occasionally catch the eye, some that i'd never even thought about.
But are we all screwed? I mustn't understand the viewpoint. I don't feel screwed, even if NI don't progress their line up, there will be a transitional period where I will still keep and love using the M+ until maybe something comes along that's better for me. If there is something better, I will probably use the better product but continue to keep using the M+ on occasion and probably re falling in love with it again.
I have a lot of gear that can mostly achieve a similar end result. but it's the journey to the end point that makes this a class act. It's interesting to read the opinions of die hard long term users though. You clearly loved this company once or you wouldn't be here fighting for how you see your projection of what the company can be in your eyes.

Well, I must confess just like you don't understand the overall viewpoint here, I don't understand yours...
You lost your love for Maschine with the MK3 but after they put a computer inside it and called it M+ your love got renewed and everything was fixed?
If that's all it took then I'd say you like the software as it is, and moreover you prefer an even more limited version of it, which is fine, not everyone is a disappointed user, there are plenty of happy campers out there... There's absolutely nothing wrong with that but I seriously doubt the user base is growing and we all know what eventually happens to products with a diminishing userbase count...

Yeah, strange isn't it? I guess it's the standalone groovebox focused hardware vs controller attached to a computer and all it's potential distractions and extra cables thing. The freedom to roam to a better place. Possibly some psychological reasoning behind it that can be described eloquently by someone else.
I doubt NI's Maschine market has grown too and I never said it had, unless I didn't explain what I meant above but I was talking about my perception of the "groovebox" market, which to me looks to be booming.
I was saying, that I don't think NI predicted that boom.

Maschine 3 will be out soon, and it's a practically a given that NI will have a new hardware Mashine that has the same on-device CPU and display as the S-Mk3 keyboards.
Timetable for this might be synced up with the S-Mk3 keyboards getting a firmware update that ushers in Play Assist handled by the on-device CPU.
KK3 and Machine SW will be even more parallel in development than they have been in the past.

I somehow could take threads like these, which also surface in other forums regularly, more serious if NI would have dropped from being the top of the business to the bottom of the business, and laid off 90% of its staff.
This way, I can only feel a bit pity for the people who obviously don't have better things to do in life than talk everything worse than it is.
Also, what threads like these (and the people in it) sorely miss every time is the realization that the crowd that you cater to has significantly changed in the last 25 years. People using audio plugins aren't nerds anymore, and, a lot of the music industry has changed towards certain musical genres which have other ways to make music as well. You either cater to these people, or you can simply say that you are willing to cut off 90% of the market.
Now let's make some dope beatz with Maschine, OK?

That's fair! Often people are reluctant to say what you just said, not sure why. I do have a few producer friends who just want to get away from computers aswell, either because they work with computers all day in a job already or simply don't like them.
What does that mean? Stopped being a top music industry leader? Who said anything about that??? Cut it out. We are talking only about Maschine here, maybe an extension to the S-Series due to lack of Maschine support but nothing else. Konatkt for example is a very successful product, still the most popular instrument Sampler by far.
If I am unhappy I don't go to happy threads and debate the happy people, why do you feel the need to do that? Why engage in conversation just to say you don't like the conversation, you don't need to engage at all... No one is forcing you. @Jiglo is a happy camper and no one is trying to convince him to be unhappy, we can have a conversation and still disagree, it's all good.

"Konatkt for example is a very successful product, still the most popular instrument Sampler by far."
At least you are able to admit that, unlike many other people in such threads.

They mentioned becoming a platform in the past and that begged the question, a platform for what? their ambition may be sounds. Expansions, play series, electric keys duo; every month they offer new sounds. Even in light of the failed sounds.com. Machine and Komplete keyboards may only be in support of them being a platform for sounds.
If this is true, is that a bad thing? Not necessarily but it could mean that Maschine /Komplete keyboards become limited in function.

Or do you mean it had now placed profit above all else - even more than before. You know companies are made up of people with a selected group calling the shots. Then there are other aspects of being a business entity such as passion, being a pioneer to innovate, listening to what the market wants, collaborating and engaging stakeholders, being ESG environmentally responsible, doing CSR charity, managing optics and be seen to be generally in compliance, etc. Lost the way, maybe not if it knows exactly what it's doing and where its going.

Given they're still at the 'making threads asking for suggestions' stage, I'd guess a new Maschine is at least a year or two out, and I'll always go with the longer of those for NI.

What I find somewhat dispiriting is the way NI is collecting ideas for Maschine improvements and how it is feeding that back. Having worked in product development for decades I have rarely seen a more amateuristic approach to collecting and managing feature requests, except in organisations with a really low maturity level.
It doesn’t bode well for the level of professionalism that’s being applied to development at NI, unless this basic customer facing amateur approach hides a professional process behind it.
I am not slagging off the genuine motivation of the individuals involved at NI, and I assume NI has the necessary technical skills. They used to anyway, since they made significant improvements to the SW a few years back. But the approach really doesn’t look professional, which to me is either a management problem, or conscious neglect of Maschine…

I think the Maschine+ is maybe a bit of a sleeper.. I have seen new interest picking up for it elsewhere online in the places I hang out in. The initial disappointments seem to be shifting a little, as the units are crashing less now and second hand prices are making it more accessible in terms of cost to entry.
I just hope we are on a slow upwards curve, instead of a slow declining one.. In time, we will know..

To their credit, last year they did put out a Maschine survey which felt like taking a psychological test 😅
With respect to their last initiative, if you read the guidelines for submitting the suggestions, they are quite thorough, so much so that everyone is ignoring them. If they can be faulted for anything is to have overestimated the ability of users to stick to the protocol.
User feedback is not always the holy grail. I'd rather have dedicated and passionate product managers who use the product daily setting the vision for how the product should evolve. I've been saying this for a long time, but I personally believe that the constant reshuffling of personnel within NI is a major contributor to the current state of things.

It all doom and gloom here, but I'm quite certain that NI is a successful company.
They are a leader on their market, they probably sell well. And since they laid off a lot of people, they have probably improved their economics.
We can argue about customer relationship that could be better and about updates that could be more frequent, but NI as a company seems to do OK.
To some extent they remind me a bit of Avid when they were leader.
They could lose pace in innovation or lose themselves in a premium path where people will go for alternatives.
But that's in the very long run
