Can I easily switch the S88 MKII to another MIDI channel?

In your DAW you can set the track channel to one of the 16 MIDI channels, which normally is set to 1. But if you set it to 7 and you also set your instrument to 7, then you're going to be able to play, while you won't be able to if you set either your track or your instrument to different numbers. They both have to be on the same number, or one has to be on "Omni" or "Any".

Now, if I'm not using a DAW at some point, and just the standalone player, for example Kontakt or SINE, and I have different instruments loaded, so the first one is on channel 1, the second one on channel 2 and so on, is there a way to set the S88 MKII to send the keys pressed on channel 2, or 3 or whatever I specify, but without having to open the app Komplete Kontrol, and without having to setup a whole new Template in it where it will have the keys mapped to that other channel?

And speaking of Komplete Kontrol, can I set the buttons at the top to switch to a specific MIDI channel? I looked in the manual and it doesn't seem to me that it's possible, but I figured I'd ask before giving up.

So for example, I would like to set them up like this:

So when I press the first button, it switches to channel 1, the second to channel 2 and so on, but the stuff to configure each button, I entered those parameters but just to try something, I don't think that works, because the MIDI channel is 2, but in this case the number doesn't matter.

Is this at all possible, whether with buttons or not, but a way to switch to a different MIDI channel from the keyboard itself, without the DAW and without Komplete Kontrol?

Well, you do need dead simple templates to do what you want. Once the templates are done, though, you can switch instruments (swap midi channels for your Kontakt Multi) on your keyboard with the preset up and down buttons. No need for KK once done.

You can do that all the way up to 16 if you desire.

Thanks, I actually noticed that after I posted the question, I was just hoping there would be something like what I was suggesting with the buttons.

One thing that I don't understand is that each preset doesn't save the channel for the strip. If I click on the channel 6 preset and I set the strip to channel 6, it will stay on channel 6 when I change the preset to channel 2 for example. That setting is totally independent of presets.

And another thing that puzzles me is that there's no way to change the channel for the MOD wheel.

Well, in Komplete Kontrol, in the MIDI configuration section, you can create a new preset called Channel 1, and set the Keys tab to assign Note on channel 1. Then you can create another preset for channel 2, and so on.

However, the touchstrip doesn't care. If you created channel 4, and you set the strip to channel 4, then you switch to channel 2, the strip will still be in channel 4. If you set the strip to channel 1, you can create all the presets you want, but it will stay in channel 1, or the last channel you set up for it.

Basically, the touchstrip channel doesn't get saved with the preset. It stays at whatever channels you set it the last time.

Yes, the midi template page is way too basic for my liking. But you have way more ability to map all the buttons and knobs from the DAW side with midi learn. I did a deep dive video on doing just that with Studio One if that interests you. Cheers.
