Octoban vst?
Hey NI
Not sure what forum this goes in, I was hoping to get this to NI itself. I've been looking around all the vst companies trying to find octobans like Stuart Copeland and Mark Brzezicki use. It would be great if maybe the was bundled as an upgrade to your modern drummer vst you have out.
Just throwing that out there.
Thanks

I don't know the first thing about Stuart Copeland and Mark Brzezicki , but I found this :

I had to Google to find out what octobans were! Abbey Road 80s Drummer is what you need.

Thank you 🙂 I am even more confused by it all than you are since I know even less about drums.
But I found this Test and translated a section from German , in description it says (translated) : In addition to tambourines, sticks, claps, cowbells and woodblocks, the percussion section this time also includes timbales and the Tama Octobans tubular drums.
Another German site also mentions the Octobans in passing : "You get solid drums that can also find their place in modern productions. The gate effect is more of an interesting addition than the sole highlight. It is joined by the octobans and concert toms that were popular in the 80s."
A third site mentions the Octobans also and adds : "Both low and high Octobans were sampled for the Abbey Road 80s Drums project" (I will not link to that site)
Also , apparently Steinberg sampled something or partly sampled Octobans : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RpQDjES_vU and : https://www.steinberg.net/vst-instruments/groove-agent/expansions/simon-phillips-studio-drums/
Also the Moderator EvilDragon 9 years ago made demo of the AR80's Octobans so he must know where they are !

What is going on here? I've just gone into 80s drummer / equipment and can't find them listed on any drumset there. I've also searched the site for octobans and nothing comes up for me. Where did you find that quote ?
Point me in the right direction PF

Wait PF I've found the quote. Strangely enough that's the only hint of them on the site. It won't even come up on a site search. Anyway ......apparently they are there.
Thank you sir.

That is outstanding work PF! Octobans are long small circular drums. They're generally high pitched. The drummer for The Police would have them if you're familiar with them.
I found the simon phillips ones earlier. I'll see if I can track down ED in the meantime. Gave you another like for all your hard work sir!

Yes, Thank you 🙂 A few minutes before reading your post here I had started to read about different Tama drum sets and looked in old catalogues , and I finally stumbled over this :
OCTOBANS : Octobans are one of TAMA's first original instruments and have been used by a diverse group of progressive players including Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Stewart Copeland, Bill Bruford, Mike Portnoy, and Tim Alexander. Instead of relying on changing drum diameters, the pitch of each Octoban differs according the length of the drum's shell. The 6" diameter shells can be tuned melodically and are available in low-and high-pitch sets.
Thank you so much for your very kind appreciation ! 🙂

Sorry , I didn't catch the meaning of that when I first read it ! , Evil Dragon is easy to find , he is here : https://community.native-instruments.com/discussion/38/meet-the-team , also if you want to know more about the E.D. then there is even a blog post about him here : https://blog.native-instruments.com/mario-kruselj-a-k-a-evildragon-talks-creativity-kontakt-scripting-and-more/
Quote : Where does your online handle, EvilDragon, come from?
I’ve always had a fondness for dragons – they’re just so cool, but also, in most cases, evil. Since I think of myself as a rather benevolent and easy-going person, why not mess with people’s perception a bit and defy their expectations? There have been many cases where people ended up scratching their head at this supposedly ‘evil dragon’ helping them out time and time again. It’s all about perception. Online aliases are supposed to be fun but also memorable, I think, and it looks like mine succeeded.
