I have noticed unstable behavior with K8 especially opening older .nki instruments that are from 2014 or earlier. Kontakt simply closes with the crash reporter.
There is a workaround however: you need to create an "empty" instrument first before you open anything. Just double click into the area on the right (classic view) until the standard instrument box appears. Then drag and drop your old .nki into the window. The instrument should now open fine.
Hoping for NI to address this instability in a future update!
