Studio Drummer Step Recording

Is it possible to do step recording with Studio Drummer in Maschine? I would like to be able to load the different drums used in a SD KIT into separate sound slots in Maschine. I found some one-shots that look like they came from SD, but they seem to be incomplete. For example I found tom toms with garage/session/studio in their names which somewhat corresponds to kit names from SD, but there are only three tom toms in the one shots when the corresponding SD kit has four. Same with cymbals. Two types of crash in the kit, only one type available as one-shots. Maybe one-shots are not the complete set of SD sounds?

Is there someway of accessing all the drum sounds used in SD kits as individual sounds or is this not possible? If not then is there another way to use SD to step record in Maschine? I’ve searched the forums and YouTube and so far have not found anything like this.

Hello,

you can do that by loading a full kit on every pad, unload every instrument you don't need if you want. Then go to the options page and set the instrument you want to step edit on that pad to C3. Now it should work as you want, if I understood you correctly.

So, as a followup question unrelated to Studio Drummer….

All of the step recording videos I have found are doing it only with drums. So if I want to step record with another instrument, like Massive, I found I can do something similar. I load an instance of Massive in each sound slot, then in Pad Mode assign a different root key to each pad/slot.

Is this the most efficient way to do step recording using instruments? It's easy enough, though I wonder how taxing it is on resources and if this the best way to work with instruments in step recording?

Yeah that's also a way to do it I should have mentioned too, load just one instance in the first slot, then send midi from all the other pads to the first one and route audio from the first pad to the corresponding pad back where midi comes from for the sound. It depends a bit on what you want to do. The method with several instances you can also mix different vst instruments very quickly for example use a maschine sampler on one pad for one sound and massive for another and use kontakt studio drummer on all other pads while being able to quickly move them around. Then of course save it as group, or save single sounds as pads and combine them quickly by loading them onto the pads. If you just want to use studio drummer the method with one instance on the first pad and route audio and midi might be better - sorry for not pointing out directly the two ways.

With massive you could just use the method I linked above, or if you want to have different instances for the purpose like different FX on different notes or slightly different patches on each note you could try to use the global tune to shift each instances pitch like you need on massive you find it under the global tab then on the top left within that tab, on massive x you find it on the top left next to the oscillators. But you can also do it all with one instance with press and hold the step and set the note with the 3rd knob from left. Again it depends on what you want to do.

For my purposes I didn't need to do anything with Kontakt or the Maschine input audio sources. I found that all I had to do was load a single instance of the instrument (Studio Drummer for example) in slot 1 of the group, give each of the other slots in the group a drum piece name (snare, tom1, etc.), set the MIDI output of each slot to slot 1, then configure both the pads and Studio Drummer for the correct notes corresponding to each drum piece. This saves about 3gb of memory and my project loads much faster.

I can see where some of the other methods you provided would be useful for different purposes. Thanks again for taking time to answer my questions.
