The S88 MK2 isn’t sending any MIDI data to the 5-pin DIN connector.

Hi,

I'm using an S88 MK2 and wanted to connect or trigger my iPad using a MIDI-to-USB adapter (Prodipe).
I can’t get the iPad to receive MIDI data.
So:
I connected the Prodipe to another digital piano, and it works perfectly there (even without a power supply).
The Prodipe indicates incoming MIDI data via an LED in that setup.
But not with the S88.
Did I accidentally turn something off here?
In Komplete Control, I don’t see anything at first glance that would suggest this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

It is not possible to send MIDI data to the USB and 5 pin mode from the Komplete Kontrol application but there is a workaround, everything is explained in the article shared before: Sending USB and 5-Pin MIDI Simultaneously from Komplete Kontrol S-Series Keyboards

is the MK2 also connected to a PC? You cannot have the USB of the MK2 connected to anything if you want direct midi out or it sets the midi out as a daw midi output, not direct.

You would think, but no. The MK2 does not have the on-board settings to select how the MIDI port works. It simply sets the MIDI DIN as a DAW output when connected via USB making it impossible to connect a PC and hardware devices at the same time without using some kind of MIDI loopback feature within the DAW to send midi fromt he keyboard back out the MIDI DIN port. MK3 has the ability but it is not possible in the MK1 or MK2

The article that @PoorFellow is accurate, it is indeed a workaround valid for mk2 keyboards. This workaround is not needed for the MK3 keyboards since you can select what MIDI ports you want to enable on the keyboard itself.

That’s exactly what I was afraid of, so I’ve been using the audio interface as a workaround for now. It also has MIDI IN/OUT with 5-pin DIN connectors as an added feature. It works so far—but Komplete Control has to be running. I haven’t read your link yet. Maybe it explains something else.

Yes, but it does NOT explain why such a workaround is needed which is why I tried to explain why it is a limitation. The issue here is when multiple people dive onto a thread adding 2 bits before the OP has even had a chance to ask a follow-up question it ends in confusion. Since there are now 2 mods with all the answers I will exit myself I guess…

I think that that is rather unfair , I do not think that I have represented myself here as 'having all the answers'.

You however usually appear as 'having all the answers' and since you obviously have more insight than I in some matters then I had to ask Jeremy_NI to clear up the smatter for me since you so obviously dismissed the support article that I had as reference.

What I mean is I asked the user for clarification on how their keyboard was connected first before confusing them with solutions that may not address their actual situation and usually in my line of work, you wait for a response. Usually I refrain from a thread if it is open for input from the user (usually good practice) or someone seems to have the answer already. Sometimes it is perfectly acceptable to let a thread run its course first and let users engage with each other THEN offer anything that may have been overlooked or is not correct but other users can also be awarded a chance to test their knowledge.

The linked article refers to installing loopback software and using MIDI and USB at the same time which isn't what he is asking and it also does not reference in the link what model that info applies to so I did not initially click it assuming you posted the current info for the MK3 which is different so I figured you posted something that was not applicable. A mistake on my part I didn't check your link but also, i'm trying to first understand the user and not invest more time checking other people's advice…

The MIDI output is not sending data so rather than run down a rabbit hole it makes sense to first ask how the keyboard is connected then explain that if it is connected to USB (even if it is powered from USB) the MIDI port wont work and suggest that if he has the plug pack, just connect that then MIDI to the ipad OR yes, the link you suggested could also work BUT if he also uses a DAW then often this can also be handled within a DAW to rout the MIDI the same way without extra MIDI drivers and ports added to your system. The article, tho correct if that is how you wish to do things, explains none of this so for someone not aware it may seem confusing and I think even Jeremy picked this up. I felt the simple question I asked was being overshadowed before the user could even respond.

If I am putting my voice into a thread, yes I usually do have a pretty good idea of the answer but of course not always and the main point of my statement is IMHO mods (and admins, hired help, interns from NI, apparitions or whatever specific handle you would like to class them under) don't need to interject into every thread to correct another user before there has even been an answer to the first question. As great a job as both you and Jeremy both do to support users, these forums sometimes feel less like a community forum and more like an official police state support forum since why would users invest their time to discuss and assist if mods are just going to jump in the moment someone isn't 100% correct about something before people can discuss things.

That is pretty low fruit nitpicking as I am fully aware of who wears the pants. I simply decided to leave the thread since there were now 2 mods/admins handling the thread and hey, I can be a grump sometimes but it was a deliberate dig to just say it's disconcerting when you simply post a quick question on a user forum and get second guessed and corrected by multiple mods/admins/apparitions (however you like to be referenced) before even hearing from the user. Maybe leave room for users to actually engage with other users first.

And respectfully I am not asking for, nor do I seek your approval and tho you are 'just a user' you carry the representation of NI as a 'mod' so passive aggressive replies are not a good look, IMHO.
