FM8 allows you to choose a waveform, but there are limitations. The Yamaha SY99 and Synclavier could apply frequency modulation to sampled waveforms. If FM9 were to include those features in the future, I think it would be a huge hit.
FM9? Wishful thinking. VP
What we imagine becomes reality.
Not when you are just coming out of insolvency proceedings and have a new parent company.
Reality now is hoping that NIs existing product lines - as they are right now - actually survive.

When I heard that NI had started bankruptcy proceedings at the end of January, about 80% of people said that NI would cease to exist. From that point on, my friends and I, along with those who supported us, kept imagining NI continuing to exist. So, has NI disappeared now?
They have been acquired and now have a new parent company (InMusic) that will be calling the shots.
The future of NI will be written by what the new parent decides to do.
But I would speculate this new future will not contain a new version of FM8/9
Feature request for FM9: realize it.
That’s the maximum I dare to ask at this point.
And about “has NI disappeared now?”…. Give them time 😂
Or… as they would say…. “Soon” 😏
I understand your point of view. Since it doesn't look like this will lead to a positive discussion, I'd like to stop replying to you. I'm sorry Vocalpoint.
And I understand your point of view - even as there is no indicator whatsoever of any activity with FM8/9 and there hasn't any for years now.
Pretty sure NI themselves had confirmed that product was a legacy item long ago with no chance of further work.
So - not exactly sure what you were expecting to make the discussion more "positive".
Leading up to the decision that InMusic would acquire NI, I saw a lot of unfounded negative rumors. Even though NI is still around, I think it's a waste of time to worry unnecessarily about whether it might disappear in the future. As an NI user, I'll simply share my ideas on the forum if I can. If the NI developers think it's a good idea, then I'm lucky. If not, just post my idea on another instrument company's forum. I think it's a very straightforward idea: I want to see the emergence of an instrument based on the Yamaha DX7 that can apply frequency modulation to sampling.
Yep. Fair enough.
Good luck. VP
