Repair Low Level Voice Recording

Audio repair of a live voice recording made in a conference hall.

Voice level is low and room noise high. What is the best order to apply RX11 modules - voice isolate, voice level boost, noise reduction? Any other modules I should select? I'm working in Pro Tools.

…second best, is your common sense. When dealing with a noisy, low-level recording, the order of operations is everything. If you boost the volume first, you’re just making the noise louder and harder for the AI to distinguish from the speech! ☺️

In iZotope RX11, the goal is to clean the "signal" (the voice) before you ask the software to make it loud.

Here is the professional recommended workflow:

1. Voice Isolate

You want to start with Voice Isolate. Because this module uses machine learning to separate speech from background noise, it performs best when the noise hasn't been "baked in" by other processing or digital gain.

2. Spectral De-noise

If Voice Isolate leaves behind a "hiss" or specific steady-state noise (like an AC unit), run a light pass of Spectral De-noise.

3. Voice Leveler

Now that you have a relatively clean voice, it’s time to bring it up to a professional level. Use the Voice Leveler module rather than just a simple "Gain" boost.

Of course, the exact values of each module are different on each new track and this is something that you have to find by yourself through experiment. Presets are a good start but that is all they are, in most cases. A good starting point, nothing more.

Tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the manual tweaks, RX11's Repair Assistant is surprisingly competent. It will analyze your file and automatically apply these modules in the correct order. You can then go into the "Dial" view to turn the noise reduction up or down.
