KK S49 MK3 only allowing session record (not clip record) in Ableton 12

Hi,

I just got a brand new KK S49 MK3 keyboard today and I am having an extremely annoying problem. I bought it because my record button on my Push 2 died around 3 years ago and I am tired of using my mouse to click record.

Anyway, what is happening is when I am in DAW mode or Plug In mode within Ableton 12 (Suite) and press record on my S49 the session record activates but I cannot get it to clip record. The only way I can get it to clip record is to create a clip and press play and whilst playing i can press record on my S49 mk3 and that will enable clip record.

I am running the latest version of the KK software and the firmware within the S49 MK3 is up to date. I have checked my midi configuration 30 times and not matter what I cannot get it to record into a clip by itself. Control surface is set to KK mk3 DAW both in and out.

Ideas please?

I have discovered, via the link you sent me before actually, that by pressing the navigation knob clip recording is enabled. Maybe the behaviour has been updated since that video u linked to?

It works! Not by pressing the record button but by pressing the main navigation knob in. Strange but that's also what it states in the manual it seems.

What is your N.A. version ?

Are your Ableton Live 12 updated to latest version ?

Have you allowed full disk access and local network access for all Audio apps and DAW ? : ALL NI apps including NTKDaemon must have full disk access. : How to Enable Full Disk Access on macOS

And if using Sequoia/Tahoe then N.I. apps must be added to the Local Network (Ref.: How to grant audio apps access to your local network on macOS 15 Sequoia)

Have you tried reinstalling the HCS (Hardware Connection Service ?

Here are the first things you'd want to try, before anything else (including complaints):

Ensure you have installed the latest version of NA2
In NA2, after registering the keyboard, you will see NI Hardware Connection Service available.
Install it
Then, turn on the keyboard. Ensure it is connected via the main (not aux) USB-C port on the keyboard. This is labelled "Host".

That should work. If not, open Activity Monitor to ensure NI Hardware Connection Service is running.

Lastly, I see you are on an M1. It is possible the next message applies to you (but please follow the steps above first):

USB-C Connectivity Issue:

Problem:
Some computer chip sets made between 2020 and 2023 have a known USB-C error that can't be fixed. This can cause sporadic problems with USB-C peripherals like the Kontrol S MK3, including connection failures,freezing, or issues with firmware updates.

Solution:
If you experience these issues, try using a USB-C hub between your Kontrol S MK3 and your computer. This can help avoid the problem and ensure a stable connection. This is critically important during firmware updates, as data loss could cause broken firmware. Make sure the hub supports both power and data transfer.

Else , what is your keyboard Firmware version and your N.A. installed HCS version ?

Yes, I am running an M1 Mac. I am on the latest version of NA, firmware is updated in my KKs49 mk3 (I opened the box new today). This is not a connection issue. I have tried all different ports both with and without a hub involved.

This is a mapping issue / bug. It has nothing to do with firmware and or cables or updates. I am running the latest version of everything.
