can't add multiple instances from libraries

When clicking on the library for the first time, a library is added to the Kontakt instance, however when I try to add a second instance, it replaces the first instead of allowing an additional instance of the library. Happens in various versions of Kontakt. Also just started getting garbled interfaces in the rack window. Any advice?

It sounds to me like you're trying to combine different intruments into a combined instrument. As shown You can have more than one instrument added to the list of instruments by selecting the + character in the Instruments on a blank line then selecting a second instrument. You can stil manage them independently by selecting the one you want to change.
