Why Middle East Percussion Looping handle time signature changes

I'm working on a film score, which must have time signature changes, and I've discovered the Discovery Series: Middle East percussion samples (V. 1.01) for Kontakt, which are great. The issue is with that if there is a time signature change before a loop is triggered, the loop begins at the wrong beat.

Bar 27 is a bar of 2/4

Bar 28 is a bar of 4/4 - this is where the loop (an 8/4 loop called Masmoudi) should start on beat 1 of the 8 beat cycle. However, it starts at beat 3!

Does the Sync function always correspond to the bar before the loop is triggered? Is there a way to turn this off? Otherwise, the way this instrument is programmed, makes it quite impossible to use in a setting where meters need to change. Yes, I can record it into audio, but in film, tempos need to change based on the cut of the film.

Any thoughts on this would be most helpful.

About your question

This is a known quirk with the way NI's Discovery Series handles "host sync." These libraries are often hard-coded to calculate their position based on the absolute number of beats from the very beginning of the project (t=0), rather than the start of a specific MIDI note.

When you have a 2/4 bar, the total beat count of your project becomes an even number that doesn't necessarily align with the 4-beat or 8-beat "phasing" the script expects for a Masmoudi rhythm.

Why this is happening?

The Kontakt script is likely using a mathematical modulo operation to determine which beat of the loop to play.

• In a standard 4/4 project, Bar 28 starts on Beat 109.
• With a 2/4 bar at Bar 27, Bar 28 starts on Beat 107.
• Because 107 is not divisible by 4 (or 8), the engine "thinks" it is already two beats into a cycle and starts the sample at Beat 3 to stay "in sync" with the global timeline.

Solutions to fix the Sync

1. The "Start Offset" Knob

Most Middle East percussion patches have an Offset or Start Beat knob on the main interface (usually near the pattern selection i think). If the loop is consistently starting 2 beats late at Bar 28, automate this knob or manually set it to start at Beat 7 (or -2 beats) so that when the host triggers it "late," it aligns with the "1."

2. Change Sync Mode to "MIDI Clock"

Check the Options or Engine tab within the instrument (sometimes hidden under a cog icon). Look for a setting that toggles between Sync to Host and Sync to MIDI Note. If you can set it to Restart on Note, the loop will ignore the project's global beat count and start from the beginning of the sample the moment it receives a MIDI Note On message.

3. "Force" method through MIDI CC Automation

The Discovery Series often uses CC #110 or similar for pattern restarts. Check the manual or the "Info" pane in Kontakt. Often, sending a specific CC value right before the 4/4 bar begins will "reset" the internal engine's playhead.

4. Time Stretching

Since you mentioned tempos change with the film cut, recording to audio is indeed risky. Try moving the 2/4 bar. If the meter change can happen after the loop starts, or if you can make the preceding bars equal a multiple of 4 (for example, two 2/4 bars instead of one), the math will align again.

Is there a way to "turn it off"?

Technically, no. The "Sync" button on the interface ensures the loops stay at your host BPM. Turning it off usually reverts the loop to its original recorded BPM, which ruins the film scoring workflow.

Quick tip: Since Masmoudi is an 8-beat cycle (8/4), the engine is looking for the project to be at a beat count divisible by 8. You can "trick" the engine by inserting another 2/4 bar earlier in the cue to bring the total beat count back to a multiple of 4 or 8 before you hit Bar 28. 😉
