Komplete Kontrol S88 Sustain Pedal in stand alone mode

I tried reaching out to support and their response to this question was to link the MK3 troubleshooting guide and say to provide more information. I'm not sure what information they need, so I decided to ask here.

I have a Komplete Kontrol S88 MK2 which I am trying to use in stand alone midi mode. I also have two M-Audio SP2 sustain pedals. When connected to a Windows PC it works fine, however, when trying to use it in standalone mode, I cannot get the sustain pedals to work. When a sustain pedal is plugged into the Pedal A connection, I get a constant stream of CC12 updates on Midi channel 1. Adjusting the pedal seems to adjust the frequency of these messages, but it does not ever send anything on CC64 as documented in the User's Manual.

I have done the following:
1. Followed the instructions here https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005166305-How-to-Configure-Sustain-Expression-Pedals-on-Kontrol-Keyboards?input_string=komplete+kontrol+s88+sustain+pedal+in+stand+alone+mode.
2. Powered everything off
3. Removed the USB cable and connected the Midi Out to Midi In on my synth
4. Powered on the S88
5. I have tried with both pedals plugged in. Pedal B seems to output an on/off message on CC66.
6. I have tried with no pedals plugged in. No messages are emitted from the S88
7. Pedal plugged into only Pedal A (CC12 continuously emitted)
8. Pedal plugged into only Pedal B (CC66 message only on pedal state change).

I have also tried holding down the shift and midi buttons while power on, as described here: https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210264145-How-to-Switch-Your-Native-Instruments-Controller-to-MIDI-Mode?input_string=komplete+kontrol+s88+sustain+pedal+in+stand+alone+mode. That has not made any difference.

Hello,

first you don´t press "shift + midi" while power on you can press it if you are connected to a pc then you can use the mappings you can make in komplete kontrol. In stand alone mode you also don´t have to press it, means you only connect power and midi din, then the pedals should output pedal a 64/65 (tip/ring) its only made for the simple switch pedals not for controller pedals (in stand alone mode), pedal b outputs cc11, and this is made for controller pedals. the mapping is fixed for stand alone mode as you can see in the manual chapter 9.4. So you can use this kind of pedals on input a, and on input b you would need a controller pedal. If you need both switch pedals you would need an adapter from two mono ts sockets to one stereo trs plug, then one pedal should give out cc64 the other 65 as on/off or 0/127.

thanks for the feedback. I did get a trs to dual ts cable and it's mostly working.

For anyone in the future who is confused by this, it appears that the manual is just incorrect. I now have my M-Audio SP2 pedals connected to the Tip and Ring of Pedal A and and a Roland DP-10 expression pedal plugged into Pedal B. The actual mapping appears to be:

Pedal A Tip = Midi CC 66
Pedal A Ring = Midi CC 67
Pedal B = Midi CC 12

I'm using a Zynthian (https://zynthian.org/) synth. It's possible it's remapping midi cc, but I doubt it.

That's very strange I don't own an MK2 so I can't test it. Maybe additionally contact support might be an option but you would have to wait for an answer. And have you checked the firmware version, and how did you test the midi CC signal

The interface on the Zynthian has a midi log that shows all midi messages it receives. As far as I can tell, it's just the raw log of everything it sees. I tested a pedal on each connection and got the results as above. I actually also just received a response from a support ticket that I opened:

In the factory default, Pedal A is configured as an Expression input (TRS). Because you plugged in a Sustain pedal (TS/Mono), the pedal is shorting the "Ring" contact, which the keyboard interprets as a continuous stream of data (CC12).

In the factory default, Pedal B is configured as Sostenuto (CC66). This is why you are getting a clean on/off signal, but the wrong CC number for standard Sustain (CC64).
"

The suggested solution is to remap the midi controls for the synth since the MK2 does not have onboard templates. I mostly just wanted to document my findings in case someone else is confused by the discrepancy between the manual and what it actually happening.

If that iwas true your two pedals on input a should not work + the manual would be totally wrong about stand alone mode, and this default cc´s in the manual make sense the ones you got in reality make no sense. I really can't get my head around this. If you have an audio interface with midi in, you could connect midi out from the keyboard stand alone and log the Incoming midi data with modo-ox for example but a daw should do too. Just to be sure.
