I've been writing some songs, punk rock and stoner rock, and I'm trying to record them digitally. Problem is, I'm new to actual, for real DAWs, etc. I can't seem to find any easy-to-understand learning content for absolute beginners.
Some background:
I have a little bit of absolutely ridiculous DIY digital recording, but it was over a decade ago. I just figured out means to achieve my goals, but they were rudimentary and stupid complicated.
I have a Line 6 Guitar Port (basically a direct box) with their GearBox software. I would record guitar and bass parts in an .mp4 format in small chunks, then convert them into .wav files. Next, I would add those .wav files into a solo audio track in Sony Vegas (a video editing program) and "Lego" the files together.
Then came the hard part. I had a CD called "Drumkit from Hell," which had a ton of single-beat wave files, played on and by the drummer of Meshuggah's kit. I would take each tiny wave file and put them into separate audio channels for each drum and cymbal I was using and I would move them back and forth to get the beats I wanted and get them in time. Royal p.i.t.a.

So, I'm looking for software that will basically allow me to do the same thing; edit instrument tracks, but program the drums in a software program. I'd prefer to keep it digital, if possible (and advisable), but I'm not opposed to a controller, like a small keyboard. Obviously, I'd also like to avoid breaking the bank.
I just downloaded the free version of Kontakt 8 Player and I have no idea where to go from there. I would absolutely love it if somebody would hold my hand and explain where I should start as if I was a clueless teen (I'm old as hell…).
Not so much tutorials, though links to those would be a welcome bonus, but specifically which plug-ins I can use to record, edit, and program guitar/bass/vocals/drums in a heavier music style. I'd like to keep in in the Kontakt family, I guess, since that's what was suggested by a friend. He was also using a plug-in called, "Get Good Drums" if that makes any difference.
Man, if somebody could help, I'd be eternally grateful.
