First time mapping - some advice needed - X1 MK3

Hi,

I bought the X1 MK3 so I can use it along with my S4 MK3. I have Traktor Pro 4 running on Windows 10.

I would like to map the X1 MK3 so I can use it exclusively for stems. I've been reading about mapping this device (at my own risk) and, before I do anything, I'd like some advice please. I have some questions:

before I start mapping, I would like to do a backup of the original mapping that comes with X1 MK3 as I prefer not to take any risks and have the original mapping so I can restore it if something goes wrong. How can I do the backup?

for example, imagine that I only map the shift button and the 8 buttons and 8 knobs of the upper mixer section of the unit, and leave the rest unassigned to any function. Will these unassigned buttons not work at all because they have no assigned function, or will they work normally but with their original functions (from factory)?

the modifier is something that is scaring me. I've found a link where this is explained and I understood part of this. However, I couldn't find any videos on YouTube showing this in action, as I believe it would help me understand it better. Does anyone know of a video or a tutorial that explains this in detail?

First of all, no reason for any kind of fear because with midi mapping you cannot do any kind of harm to the device and everything is reversible. Original mapping can be added with just a few clicks as well.

Everything you do not touch (has no assigned function in your custom mapping) will behave like in the factory mapping.

What about modifiers you want more details of? How they function or you have a specific use case where you think modifiers would help?

About the modifiers - I always like to understand why things work one way or another, and I would like to comprehend in which cases the modifiers are used and applied.

A practical example - is it possible to map the knobs of the upper section mixer so they work like this:

without any key combination, simply rotating each of the four knobs on the left side changes the volume of each stem on deck A
pressing and holding SHIFT and rotating each knob (the same previously mentioned) changes the volume of each stem filter on deck A

In this example, do I need to use the modifiers? If yes, why?
