I own Kontakt 8 but need Kontakt 7

Hello,

I recently upgraded to Kontakt 8 from 6, but a colleague of mine has sent me a Logic session that uses Kontakt 7, and I need to be able to edit that work and send it back. I've found the downloader for Kontakt Player but I need the full version for some of the libraries to work. Any idea where I can find the downloader/get around this issue?

The only option is to purchase a third party licence at this point.

K7 is no longer sold. And owning a K8 license does not give you access to prior versions.

You might also be able to connect with NI Support to get a version of K7 Player?

Finally - Logic does supports Kontakt instance conversion so opening a K7 session should simply use K8 on your end.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your reply. I did reach out to NI support yesterday but it seems as they're insanely backed up so I have not had a response yet.

When I open the project it loads the library patched in Kontakt 7 player, and when I open up Kontakt I get the 'Kontakt full version required' message (screenshot attached). Obviously the upgrade option doesn't work as I don't have a 7 license, but could you point me to where I might find how to do the conversion to 8 in Logic please?

Ah. I see. That scenario requires Full due to the library being called.

And as far as Logic Kontakt instance conversion goes - I am not a Mac user but I understand the conversion happens on the fly.

Do not think there is any need to set anything in within Logic.

Ah okay, I appreciate your response! I think my best bet is to hear back from NI and see if they can grant me a Kontakt 7 license.

As you don't have the same plugins as your colleague, maybe your colleague could render the "Needs Kontakt 7" parts to audio, so you don't need what you haven't got.

There are 4 things you can do.

Your colleague can invest in Kontakt 8.
You can do your best to buy a 2nd-hand K7 licence from an unknown vendor. I believe there is a section in this forum where you can do this.
You can load your colleague's project and make the edits, then send him instructions, perhaps with a video, so he can carry them out himself. If your host programme doesn't do "automigration", your colleague will have to save the contents of each instance of Kontakt as an nkm file (save multi as…), then you can replace the K7 instances on your machine with empty K8, and load in the nkm files.
Get your colleague to activate K7 on your machine with his account. This is not strictly kosher, but though I have nothing but contempt for pirates, I would do it myself without any qualms. The problems you face with this entirely legitimate (and not uncommon) scenario is entirely caused by NI's absurd unreasonable and entirely unnecessary activation policy of denying Kontakt owners access to previous versions. Not only that, they won't even sell you a licence for a previous version.

If you are feeling ultra-virtuous, you could ensure your colleague doesn't already have more than 2 copies of Kontakt on different computers, and that you don't both use K7 at the same time. I wouldn't bother. NI are not that reliable at sticking to EULAs themselves. (For instance, there is no way to activate Kontakt 2, despite its EULA stating clearly that NI have an obligation to provide the means to do this.)

I suppose your 5th course could be to persuade NI to give you a K7 licence. We're not holding our breath here. (If they do, be sure to let us know. It will be a major breakthrough).

Thanks for the detailed response. Unfortunately we're working on the second season of the show where she was the sole composer on season 1, so it would be a massive headache to reload everything in Kontakt 8 and I need to be able to load the library to make the edits so I can hear what I'm doing… I'll keep pestering NI and see if they can grant me a K7 license, otherwise I guess I'll try finding a third-party license.

We'll also try exporting the presets from K7 so I can load them in K8 but that would be a massive pain to have to do every time, especially when the schedule starts to get crunchy… Fun times!

Still not quite understanding this at all.

You should simply be able to delete K7 Player on your end, open that project in "your" Logic - and Logic will load everything into K8. You can make your edits and off you go. There should be no concept of a headache.

And in the spirit of maintaining a good working relationship with colleagues - if you are working an actual (paying) TV series here - it might be time to gently suggest to your colleague a move to Kontakt 8 to avoid this scenario in the future.

This experience would give me a definite heads up that this won't get any easier if my colleague stayed on K7.

Makes good sense.

And from what VP says, you won't need to mess about with nkm files - your DAW does do automigration and will do this for you automatically.
