The Kontrol MK2 88 is USB A. I have a MacBookPro that has USB C connections. But I also have a dock that has USB 2.0 B connections. Is there any performance differences between going straight to the laptop vs to the hub?
I'm pretty sure the MK2 has a USB-B connector not a USB-A. USB-A is flat, USB-B is the square one with rounded corners on the top. Or bottom, depending which way up you hold it. The USB-B connectors only support standard USB2 speeds, so you'll have no performance difference whether you plug it in the dock or the Mac. The dock does need to be powered as non-powered hubs aren't supported.
