How simple is it to use Komplete Kontrol Keyboards when swapping between Cubase 14 & Pro Tools 2024

Windows 11.

Cubase 14

Pro Tools 2024

Ableton Live 12

HI

I am hoping for user experience regarding using a Komplete Kontrol Keyboard while swapping between DAWs.

I will explaine what I mean by this.

I write/compose in Cubase 14 because I find that has the best MIDI tools.

I mix in Pro Tools for various reasons but I may need to amend or quickly use a virtual synth in there too.

I some times may write in Ableton but that is rare.

At the moment I have a Arturia Keylab Essential 49 Mk3 and a Nektar Impact LX25+ `neither of which work in Pro Tools or Cubase, no idea why.

I am having a nightmare time with Arturia and Nektar trying to get tech support which is frustrating and I want to take a sledge hammer to both.

Once setup, and only one time setup, how well does a Komplete Kontrol keyboard remain setup and function within these DAWS?

Each time you open a DAW, do you have to fiddle around with settings to get the Komplete Kontrol Keyboard to work or does it remain setup, fully intergrated and ready to work?

It is an inspiration, morale and workflow killer having to mess around with settings each time a DAW is opened.

I would appreciate your real world experience and views.

Thanks in advance.

Having never used 3 DAWs on one machine - I think you might be looking more like "3 times setup" = one for each DAW.

And - not exactly sure how Komplete Kontrol would react using just it's single DB of plugin data across three different DAW environments.

Guess you could try it and find out.

    Hi VP

    Thank you for your reply.

Maybe I did not explain that correctly sorry about that, I meant only one setup in each DAW.

I could try it and see what happens but I'd rather not spend more cash and have the same issues.

Also know that this scenario is probably not common - and unless someone has tried it - hard to tell how one install of Komplete Kontrol being served to three different DAWs would react.

Once in a great while I end up working on some old stuff on my Sonar Platinum even though all my daily work is on Ableton. I don't remember there being a lot of hassle getting the setup right for Sonar Platinum other than remembering where the parameters for the keyboard needed to be entered. It's all the same parameters, just in other places in the interface. As far as I know it still works even though I haven't had to use it in a long time. The same is true for getting the setup correct for all the Native Instruments libraries.

I suspect the issues may be more about updates to libraries and major parameter changes on newer versions. The keyboard just works because the parameters are fairly limited.

I’m trying to understand if you want to use the DAWs one at a time or having more than one open together.

For the former case I don’t see where the problem could be.

Tomorrow if I have time I will also test the latter (which could work anyway imo, since Komplete Kontrol keyboards should serve the focused instrument). But I can test only with my MK1

    Hi everyone

    Thank you for your replies.

I only have one DAW open at any one time.

Normally I compose/write in Cubase 14 as I have used it ever since Cubase SX v5 so I know it inside out.

I would then export the tracks as Wav (close out Cubase) and then import them in to Pro Tools for mixing and/or editing before sending the PT Session off to the client for approval and then for mastering.

The weak link is Pro Tools implimentation of MIDI Keyboards, and Cubase is getting less usable each time the Steinberg elves mess with the code hence my question here.

It will work just fine, kind of what it is designed for. It's more a case of dealing with the quirks and issues of compatibility between each DAW but it will basically work just as a MIDI keyboard will work.
