I appreciate your answer. My issue was with GR5 Pro. I purchased GR7 Pro, installed it and the issue went away. You can still get this message if you manually start GR while it is already running. With GR5 I was getting the message after running GR then opening up my DAW (Mixcraft 10 Pro) and using GR as a plug in. It works fine now with GR 7.

Are you running GR standalone or in a DAW? If it's inside a DAW be aware that two instances will give you the same error message.

I've had GR since 2012. Started with 3 then 4 then 5. I use the Rig 3 controller. I use it stand-alone and also with my recording software Mixcraft 10 Pro Studio. I have used both together for this whole time. All of a sudden I am plagued with interface issues. I just started getting this message yesterday. I have tried deleting the app but it won't let me because it says it's still running, even after closing all apps and restarting the computer. I finally got it working stand-alone. However, I have lost all my custom GR5 presets because I deleted the registry.
I am beyond frustrated.

I can now use GR 3 Controller for recording and playback in mixcraft. The plug-in VSTs fro GR also work. However as soon as I open the GR 5 app I can hear my guitar but it will not record on to Mixcraft. This is whe the error message comes up.
Like I said earlier I have recorded many songs over the last 12 or so years using the combination of these 2 apps. I can't figure it out.

How did you fix it?

In my case I was getting the message although there was no other instance running. I fixed it by deleting Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Guitar Rig 7/Database/gr7dbLock. I don't know if this is safe to do, but it did work this time, so ermm, proceed with caution…
