8DIO or Native Instruments

Hi Community,

Is the 8DIO bundle, which was recently advertised on the Native Instruments site, provided by NI regarding system requirements or should I contact 8DIO?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

    That should be fine.

But now that I read @DunedinDragon post - memories of these painful old 8Dio libraries came flooding back :)

Last year when I build my new DAW - I made a conscious effort to ditch any 8Dio libraries that loaded with that goofy "spaceship" control room vibe and settled into using Soundpaint and many other tools when it came to strings etc.

There are so many better options now for many of these - that remove that nasty UI and allow me to get to work much quicker.

And - even on the 8Dio site itself - seems they are having a blowout sale on all this old stuff. I saw Ambient Guitars on there the other day for $0.00.

I even speculate that 8Dio (as a brand) will be gone at some future date and Soundpaint becomes the new standard over there.

Even the bottom of their website is still dated 2023 - that tells me where they are at :)

System requirements should be near the same - but if you are wondering about NI specifically - what is the concern?

    @Vocalpoint Thanks for answering!

I noticed that the 8DIO bundles purchased from NI take a really long time to load in order to hear all the required instruments created in the project. I have an i5 processor with 16GB.

Load time is heavily influenced by storage, CPU horsepower, the OS and the machine it is running on

If you are using a consumer grade laptop with a consumer grade (slower) laptop drive running a non-optimized version of Win 11 (for example) with just 16 GB of RAM - it won't be fast no matter what you do.

Need some more system specs to see where you are actually at.

    Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-11400 @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.8 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, Windows 11

Do you think this information is enough?

    Thanks!

Can you quantify "a really long time"?

    Thanks @PK The DJ

For example: Project loads in Cubase Pro 14.
When playing the project, the 8DIOs don't start immediately. I click on play and it starts to stutter (playback). Then I have to play from the beginning again so that the instruments can be loaded and played individually.

You also need to notate what audio interface you are using as well.

If you are experiencing gapping, glitching, hesitation, freezing between when you press the space bar in Cubase to start the transport and when you hear your sounds - there is something else going on.

And by your description - it sounds like a lack of CPU, audio latency or simply a track load that this laptop cannot overcome. Or all three.

Hence my question, what specifications are necessary?

Why don't you just tell us what the actual laptop your are using is called and it's brand? That would make this easier.

    Audio Interface: Focusrite Scarlet 2i2.

    Thanks!

Just to add info here. The old 8DIO libraries direct from 8DIO all take a long time to load because of the enormous amount of individual sample files regardless of computer. I don't know if there have been any improvement in the 8DIO libraries that have been made fully NKS compatible and are being sold at NI as I already own most everything NI is offering and bought them quite a while back.

8DIO also has a sister company called 'SoundPaint' which has taken on porting many of these libraries over to it's plugin and those have been completely rebuilt making them much more efficient, but they don't offer the packages as they've already significantly reduced the prices and generally have taken over those libraries from 8DIO, but you may find some of what you want there at VERY competitive prices.

In terms of running the older 8DIO libraries, I'm on an I7 Windows 10 PC with 16 gb of memory and 8Tb of SSD drives running Ableton Live as my DAW. The initial load times on 8DIO libraries are somewhat long but are bearable. Once loaded I never had problems with adequate performance from them, even the very largest of orchestras and choirs in the many years I've owned them.

I think the actual performance of these libraries benefit from the large number of samples that are broken down by their various articulations. This makes them very responsive once they're loaded and you're creating or playing a track and that's probably why they did them that way.

Yeah I've had the same idea about them eventually closing down the 8DIO brand, but in the last year a number of those old bigger libraries have gotten a facelift over at 8DIO to simplify and make them more responsive and easy to use, so I'm not sure they're going to completely close down. The stuff moving over to Soundpaint appears to be more limited to smaller libraries that lend themselves better to the conversion to a broader range of velocities, more advanced allocation of samples across the full keyboard, and blending and mixing of articulations and libraries from multiple sources which are the hallmark of Soundpaint. Soundpaint seems to be focusing more on their own exotic/experimental/genre specific libraries like their Disco series or Dune series along with more advanced analog synth instruments and user created instruments recently so who knows where this is all heading…
