Unable to change key mode when using Maschine 3.0.0 with Kontrol S61 Mk3 (Plug-In-Mode)

Hi,

I'm having a problem I haven't found a solution yet when searching the forums etc. and cannot figure out how to fix my issue.

By the way, I think I used the wrong category as this is a Maschine 3.0/KontrolS61 issue, sorry, I cannot edit this any more.

So, maybe some kind member of this community or a clever person with NI can help:

I just bought a brand new Kontrol S61 Mk3. It is properly installed (I followed each step suggested in https://www.native-instruments.com/de/specials/komplete/kontrol-setup/ ), firmware is up to date and I just tried it with Maschine 3.0.0. It works ok, only that I cannot change the Key Mode to "Guided" when running it with "Play assist" (scale mode) feature and in Plug-In-Mode. The latter is necessary as in Keyboard-Mode (where "Guided" is accessible), the recorded midi in Maschine does not trigger any light guide when I play back the midi patterns which may be a second issue. So, I cannot see later which keys I hit what sucks for a beginner like me. The S61 is selected as MIDI controller in the Maschine 3.0.0 preferences.

A brief description of the scale features is given here https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/de/articles/21655851372189-Die-neue-Play-Assist-Funktion-des-Kontrol-S-Series-MK3-keyboards (however in German) and in the online manual. A limitation of this feature on purpose is not mentioned anywhere.

So, I'm stuck with "Mapped" mode under "Plug-In-Mode" in Maschine 3.0.0 - the default mode. This mode however only allows for all notes within a selected scale to be played. This means, you cannot play a C# (c sharp) for example within C-major. Strangely, all modes ("Learn", "Easy", "Mapped" and "Guide") are shown on the display of the S61, but turning the control knob to select one of them does not change anything. The knob itself works properly though, the selection just does not move. Within the Maschine software however, there is no way to select these features.

I think this is a very annoying bug. Can anybody here sketch a solution or has encountered similar problems? Under Maschine 2.x everything worked fine with my old Kontrol S-49 Mk.1 and I start to regret having updated both soft- and hardware.

It would also be ok if somebody knew a solution to use Keyboard-Mode when the light guide was triggered during MIDI-playback in Maschine as a workaround. Honestly, I'd prefer the Plug-In-Mode though.

I hope I described the problem properly. Don't hesitate to ask should something be left unclear.

Thanks for a hint and kind regards from Hamburg/Germany,

Glaskachelhenk

@Glaskachelhenk The instructions you shared are for the keyboard itself, outside of Maschine 3. The examples in the video show these features with an external synth, Komplete Kontrol or Kontakt. It is different with Maschine 3. The MK3 keyboard has some integration with the Maschine 3 software and when used with the MK3 keyboard the keyboard will control the scale/arp functions of the Maschine 3 software and not the keyboard itself. I hope this makes sense, unless I've missed something!

Hi Jeremy_NI, thanks for your reply. This doesn't quite answer my question. Let me put it briefly: I would like to play within Maschine 3 my S61 mk 3 with the following setup:

    a) light-guide active for playing &

    b) scale/key mode set to "guide" &

    c) the light guide showing the keys I hit when playing back my recording in Maschine 3.

So far, I have to compromise and have either a) & b) (scale control via Play Assist from S61, not from Maschine 3 as I cannot select key mode "Guide" or any other than "Mapped") or a) & c) (with scale features from Maschine 3, selected via the S61) where the Guide-mode is missing and forbids key-external notes.

So: Is there a possibility for a) & b) & c) which was very well possible with Maschine 2 and my old S49 mk I? The only feature that is missing here is the possibility to change the Key Mode within Maschine 3 which seems like a bug to me that should be easy to fix.

    Thanks,

    Hi again,

I just discovered another aspect of this issue that renders it more generic:

I opened a project in Maschine 3 that I recently made with Maschine 2 and my old Komplete Kontrol S-49 mk1 controller. I had configured the project with the desired setup of light guide on (playing and playback) and scale mode set to "guide" and saved it that way.

And guess what - when I opened this project in Maschine 3 with my S-61 mk3, it had those features as well. However, now the key mode is stuck to "guide" and cannot be changed with the control knob (that works perfect in other circumstances).

So, I'd simply say that I cannot change the key mode within Maschine 3 integration at all. Never.

And I don't want to use the S61 mk3 in standalone mode. The integration with Maschine is the very reason I bought this otherwise utterly expensive MIDI controller.

Please, support guys, this should be very easily to fix. It is clearly a bug.

    Thanks,

    G.
