Write, record midi, work on midi in another notation application. , So is this the only way???
I am not entirely sure that I understand correctly what it is that you want. But the Ableton Live that comes free with more N.I. keyboards has a 'Piano Roll'/Midi Editor which can be used to place Midi notes using the mouse. Check the Midi Editing part of manual here. As far as I understand it then that ought allow you to create Midi files from scratch .
You most likely can find the Piano Roll Editor even in some free DAWs (?) though I do not have any exact knowledge of how all DAWs are and which features that they offer.

Yes, there are several freeware options that offer a piano roll similar to FL Studio. Here are a few popular ones:
- Cakewalk by BandLab: This is a full-featured digital audio workstation (DAW) that includes a robust piano roll editor. It's completely free and offers many of the features found in paid DAWs.
- LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio): LMMS is an open-source DAW that includes a piano roll editor. It is user-friendly and supports various plugins and sound samples.
- Tracktion T7: This is another free DAW that includes a piano roll for MIDI editing. It has a clean interface and a range of features for music production.
- GarageBand (macOS only): While not as feature-rich as FL Studio, GarageBand offers a simple and effective piano roll editor for MIDI composition.
- MuseScore: Primarily a notation software, MuseScore includes a piano roll view that allows for MIDI editing, making it suitable for those who prefer visual composition.
Each of these options has its unique features, so you might want to try a few to see which one best fits your workflow.
