Tip: Level Up Your Transitions w/ a Personal Touch in Maschine Software
Transitions tell your listeners the next chapter of your song’s story is about to happen. Generally, it helps us identity different sections of a song. An awesome way to mold your transitions to be more organic and authentic is by resampling elements of your song and adding effects. I personally, drench my transitions with reverbs delay to my lo-fi beats to create a moment for that lush atmospheric vibe. Lets try this:
- Open up your project and select a part of your song you'd like to transition from. For example, a verse with a vocal that’s about to transition into the chorus)
- Create a new group and add your favorite reverb, delay, granular effect, etc. Possibilities are endless….. Now lets resample by soloing out 2 or more elements of the verse and record it in the Sample Editor.
- Go to plug-in section and change the Sampler to Audio. Now you can view the sample’s waveform in the bottom option in Pattern Editor.
- Now lets create another group. Extend this clip with 4 or more bars. Record the sample and place start/end to the last 4 bar. We only want the tail of the reverb, delayed, or any effected part of the effected sample.
- Then go to Sample Editor then edit and reverse it.
- Go back to Pattern Editor and sound then draw a midi note up to 4 bars or however long your sample is.
- CONGRATULATIONS! You just nailed a one-of-kind specifically tailored transition to your track! Woo Hoo!
*BONUS TIP* Add automation or side chain gate for a cool stutter effect to the transition.
1. Go to your new transition. Make sure you change Sampler to the Audio Plug-in.
2. Go to Playback and change Engine mode from Re-pitch to Stretch to match sample bpm to the project bpm. Then Loop to Gate. When you press the pad with your sample you can now trigger your own gate effect or somewhat stutter pattern.
Hope these tips help your song flow gracefully from one scene to the next and ultimately tell the story of your song. Good luck guys, gals, & ghouls!
