How to Easily Set Up and Manage Stacked Leads Using Kontakt and FL Studio
One of the cool features about Kontakt is using the Rack system to create stacked leads. Because of the way FL Studio interfaces with Kontakt, it makes it easy to set up and play stacked leads with a single key press on your MIDI keyboard, but also give you the versatility to manage volume levels and set up effects for each racked instrument independently. The instructions below are for Kontakt 7 and FL Studio 2024.
- Open a new FL studio project and then add Kontakt 7 to the Channel Rack
- Click on "Kontakt 7" in the channel rack, which will open your Kontakt 7 window
- Click on View—>Rack View, then click on Library. This should bring you to the Rack View with all your available Kontakt instruments down the side
- Load the instruments that you want into the multi-rack on the right by either double-clicking or dragging and dropping it into the window on the right.
- Once you have the instruments you want, then select View—>Outputs
- In the Outputs Window that appears towards the bottom, click on "Presets / Batch Configuration" and choose Batch Function —> Clear Output Section and Create One Individual Channel for Each Instrument. Click "Yes" at the next dialog box.
- The channels in the output section should now have the name of each of the instruments assigned to them
- To the right of each instrument name on the rack, there is an icon of a camera, and then an "i" inside a circle. If you click on the "i", it should tell you the name of the output and the MIDI Channel. The Output name should match one of the channel names in the Output window, and the MIDI Channel should say "Omni". You can use the drop down arrow to change if needed.
- In the upper left corner of the Kontakt window, there is a gear icon. Click on that to open up the FL Studio wrapper settings
- This will open up three icons across the top. Click on the second one, which looks like a plugin next to a gear. Then click on processing.
- On the output map section in the lower right, click on the arrow that looks like this
12. This will refresh the names of your outputs. Now adjust each of the outputs for your instruments to a different output number using your mouse scroll wheel. Whatever number you choose will route that instrument to FL Studio's Mixer.
13. Click on the gear icon in the upper left corner to close out of the FL Studio Wrapper Settings
14. Now when the Kontakt 7 Plugin is selected in FL Studio's channel rack, it will play whatever notes you play on your keyboard for all of the instruments that you have loaded into the rack
15. You can now record to the piano roll for the Kontakt 7 VST, and all instruments loaded on the rack will play simultaneously.
16. You can now also use the FL Studio Mixer to adjust volume levels, pan, and apply plug-in effects that will apply to only the instrument that is being routed to that specific channel, giving you a large amount of flexibility in manipulating and balancing each lead you are using!
