Real-Time Setup for Live Concerts: iZotope + Kontakt

I’m using iZotope tools with Kontakt to automatically adjust sound in real-time during a live concert. This way, the Kontakt instrument matches the mix or a reference track without needing a lot of manual work. I can play live while I control the sound. This is when I play live without any sound-technician helping me.

Signal Chain:

  • Relay (Live Mix) → Neutron (Kontakt Track)
  • Neutron to control Kontakt in Real-Time
  • Ozone (Output/Master Track) for Final Touches

This is my setup:

  1. Hardware and Software:
    • You need a good laptop with a lot of fire under the hood.
    • I mainly use MainStage, but any DAW capable with low-latency processing will do.
    • Use iZotope Relay, Neutron, and Ozone (I use the Advance-versions), and Kontakt (full version).
    • A MIDI controller or foot pedal to control Kontakt in real-time.
  2. Routing Audio for Real-Time Analysis:
    • I use a live mix for a previous concert and/or reference tracks. I route it through iZotope Relay.
    • Relay sends the analysis to iZotope Neutron on my Kontakt track.
    • Neutron will now adjust EQ and dynamics automatically based on the live mix.
  3. Basic Configuration of Kontakt and Ozone:
    • I set up Kontakt with parameters (like EQ, filters, effects) that can be controlled by MIDI.
    • I use Neutron to control these parameters dynamically, so Kontakt adapts in real-time.
    • Usually I put iZotope Ozone on the output track for final adjustments to keep everything balanced.
  4. During the concert:
    • I use a MIDI controller (Komplete Kontrol M32) to make quick changes live.
    • I monitor MainStage to make small real-time adjustments in Neutron and Kontakt.
  5. Important! Save Presets
    • I always save different presets for different parts of the show.
    • I haven’t come up with a good idea to switch between these presets smoothly during the performance though.

Why I like it:

  • Real-Time Adaptation: My setup adjusts the sound instantly to fit the live mix.
  • Low-Latency: Using low-latency tools means changes happen without noticeable delay.
  • Hands-Free: You can focus on playing music while the system adapts automatically.
