how to record external midi CC into maschine?

I have a device sending midi CC into Maschine and I have it mapped to a sound param (filter cutoff)

when I press play it moves the knob back and forth slowly

when I press record play while having the auto button on (after shift pressing it) I would have expected it to record the automation as if I am physically moving the knob myself but instead it does NOT record anything :(

surely it is possible to record the incoming external midi CCs into maschine right? please help
