S88 to MacBook direct or via Hub.

This post is related to the ongoing USB-C debate but kind of in reverse.
If I connect my S88 Mk3 directly to one of the Thunderbolt/USB C ports on my MacBook, with the factory-supplied cable, it works perfectly fine.
If I connect the S88 to a powered Hub (Powered Thunderbolt 3 Hub with Thunderbolt3/USB3/USB-C/Network ports/DisplayPort), the S88 is not recognized.
I use the Macbook in a dock which provides powers and connects to monitors/everything else, but that uses up the USB-C ports on the MacBook - hence I need to connect the S88 to the powered hub that connects to the dock.
Is there any way I am going to get this to work? or are there too many hops involved. I would add that everything else, including my midi and audio interface work perfectly fine with the Powered Hub - its just the S88.
