How to work on mac and pc with two external drives

Hello everyone,
I've purchased several Native Instruments VSTs, and I also recently acquired an NI keyboard and sound card with other VSTs included.

I have two computers (a PC and a Mac). I saw on NI support that if using Native Instruments software on Mac and Windows, NI does not recommend exFAT and instead recommends using separate external drives for each operating system.

Do you know if I can install the programs on two external drives, one for the mac and one for the PC ? How do I go about switching from one computer to another while working on my projects ?
