How To Actually Route Kontakt Instruments to Individual Outputs (Kontakt/Pro Tools/MixWave)
Hello Everyone,
Creating this thread as a last resort. Getting support from either Native or MixWave seems to be more trouble than it's worth.
Basically, I've purchased a few drum libraries from MixWave. They are phenomenal. However, figuring out how to properly route each individual kit piece to its own Pro Tools Audio track has been like pulling teeth.
Firstly - I'm aware and have utilized the following:
Youtube: I can't post the link because I'm too new. There is a Youtube video in the MixWave Support page that shows how to do this.
Native: Another link I can't share. But I found an article on the Native support page that also explains this process.
Everything I've done so far to try and get this to work has come from one of those two sources.
So I'm hoping the local populous here are versed enough to shed a bit more light.
Here is how I'm sitting:
- Pro Tools Session. Stereo Instrument Track created with an instance of Kontakt Player.
- Within Kontakt, I have the following:
- MixWave drum library loaded
- 14 stereo outputs created utilizing the "+" button, and the following options:
- Soundcard/host output: "st.1"
- Ascending output assignment "checked"
- Delete existing channels…."checked"
- Make this your default…."checked"
- In the Kontakt Output section:
- Output channel names are "st.1", "st.2", etc., up through "st.14"
- Output channels are configured so that the two "physical outputs" are sequential. So output channel number 1, named "st.1" shows: Ch 01 = st.1(1) - Plugin out #1 and Ch. 02 = st.1(2) = Plugin out #2, while output channel number 2, named "st.2", shows: Ch 01 = st.2(1) - Plugin out #3 and Ch 02 = st.2(2) - Plugin out #4. This continues sequentially through output channel named "st.14", which shows plugin outs #27 and #28. These were all assigned/configured by default when I created the output channels.
- In the Mixer section of the drum library, I can assign each drum / cymbal to any one of the 14 stereo outputs I created above. The 1st output channel (st.1) seems to default to the entire kit, so I left that one alone, and started with output "st.2". I assigned the kick drum output to Kontakt output "st.2", then the snare output to Kontakt output "st.3". This continues until all of the kit pieces and cymbals that I want to have their own unique Kontakt output are assigned.
- After that is all set, I close the plugin. Now, at the Pro Tools Edit Window, under the Stereo Instrument track that has the instance on Kontakt, I create 14 Stereo Audio tracks, and set each track's input to a corresponding output from the plugin.
- When I play back my session, I hear only the 'reverb' channel (could also be the "room" or "overhead" channels, but I don't know) for the snare, and one of the toms. I hear no kick, hats, ride, china, etc.
Here is a screenshot showing my session. The red squares are there to show how the outputs within Kontakt correspond with the inputs in Pro Tools:
FWIW, I've used Addictive Drums 2 extensively, and am well-versed in performing this same procedure within the AD2 plugin. It's very simple and works like a charm. I don't know if it's Kontakt or the MixWave instrument, but this seems more difficult than it should be? Hoping I'm just missing something simple.
In any case, any and all help with this is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks everyone,
Shaun
