That's very cool but I'm not sure i'm ready for the licensing for it. I'm sure I could get something decent going in OSC.

it depends on the purpose of the system hosting the RAID. Strictly for audio? maybe not(but that depends on how much audio you deal with. I'm sure things like Amazon Music and Spotify are running RAID configs in their storage). But RAID is still relevant :)

Interesting tip there about Kontakt. I'll let you know what my results are when this project finishes loading ;)

I don't just use a dedicated drive for performance. I also use it for organization and isolation from other files and software.

Depends on the Synth/Controller and what you want to do i guess..

There is not a fixed way I setup my orchestrals. I mean I tweak here and there and try to get the sound I am looking for or I like depending on where the creative flow brings me. Sometimes I start with getting a rhythm section right and then add the lush string sounds and winds or viceversa. It really depends from the piece I want to come out of my mind.

It is a cool way you mix indeed.

However, I would recommend experimenting with the effects that you use for an orchestra a bit more to get to know them better, as well as panning.

And then make sure to balance your creativity with your knowledge and experimentation.

Btw, don't forget to have fun!

As David Gibson, a.k.a. Bob Ross of mixing could say: Put the effects and the instruments wherever you like, but only if it is appropriate for the song/piece.

If you are using Kontakt, try creating an entire mutli-instrument for each section. (Kontakt can load up to 4 pages of 16 instruments each).

Try creating a string multi to replace mutliple instances of Kontakt and see if that improves load time. If yes, create Multis for each section.

    best o luck !

SSDs are your friend. Have all your samples on external drives. Keep as much free space on your internal drive as possible. I never had good luck with Windows computers for music production (sure, may be a personal bias). I think a Mac Studio, 64+gb Ram/1+tb SSD, could be a good investment. At the least, you can unload samples you are not using in Kontakt. Load needed samples as you go to save on memory. Try using full orchestra string, brass, wind patches while you are working on the composition, then print sections when you are ready for finishing your piece. Print the section and then unload the samples.

    OK

    • Live at start alone uses about 450GB
    • When I load the template it loads 18GB
    • I purged samples on all Kontakt instances and brought it down to 7.5GB
    • Saved, closed and opened it back up took 10-15 minutes to load and still loaded at 14 GB

I'm wondering if less instances running multis is the better idea, but I'm also worried that Komplete Kontrol MK3 can't navigate multis. I haven't found a way that i can recall. I CAN! Lovely!

Working on a new template now.

    It loaded up swiftly!

The problem was an instance of kontakt for each instrument. Using multis was a lot easier on my system.

    BEWM!!

I’m in Studio one, and it has something called track presets where you can drag an instrument or a folder of instruments into the browser to essentially create a mini template of that. You can drag it back into a new project from the browser as well, and it remembers routing.

So usually I’m starting with a barebones project and just moving what I need over as I need it. That’s one way I’ve found to optimize an orchestral template.

But if you need to load everything at once I’d say to purge all samples on all kontakt instances before you save the template. Then just load the ones you need as you go.

I've had this problem once I load in too many plugins/tracks, usually you could just focus on a section (strings, horns, etc.) and do a quick render of that group and turn the plugin tracks off. It will take the load off to work on something else and still hear the rendered audio file with it. When you need to edit, disarm your other plugins and rearm the ones you want to work on. Not the best solution but it works on a budget.

I set up the Orchestra with the Strings with high attack when hitting the keys hard and then bringing cellos and violas on a less attack hit, then I combine the bass and timpani's together. I wished NI would have these presets on their orchestra's collections.Have maybe a Hans Zimmer, or John Williams presets!
