Can I relocate all my Kontakt libraries at once?

The day is getting closer and closer. That's the day each year when I finally decide to update my macOS to the latest one, in this case, Sonoma. And I never just install a major OS update on top of the last one, whether it's macOS or Windows. I backup everything, boot from a USB installer, wipe the main drive and then spend days reinstalling everything I have.

But with all the libraries I have, that's going to be a process that's going to take weeks, especially if I have to download every single Kontakt library I have, both NI and 3rd party.

But if I have to do that process for each single library, I'd rather listen to Justin Bieber for one week straight 24/7.

So let's say I copy all the folders from the current Content Location folder to another folder in an external drive that I always keep connected. When I install Sonoma, and then Native Access and all the apps, if I just click on the folder and change it to the one that now has all the content, is that going to work?

It’s not.

Not only is there no Install All or Relocate All - the real elephant in the room is that almost no NI instruments or FX are supported under Sonoma right now.

It is recipe for potential disaster when you find out all sorts of instruments have issues.

I do not understand the need to do this until everything you use - from your DAW to every plugin - is actually fully supported under Sonoma. Right now - very little is

There is no point to a rebuild if you are walking into potential trouble.

No, I actually just went through this on my M2 Studio. I have Kontakt 14 standard running MacOS 14.1.1 btw, and did not realize the content location was set to my internal storage. Like you I thought I could simply change the content location, move all the stuff to my external drive and NA would magically realize that's where everything is now. But it does not appear the NA will update anything previously installed and changing the content location only applies to anything installed going forward.

My internet connection not being the fastest, I opted to manually click the relocate button on each item. Luckily I only have Standard and one or two other things so it went fairly click, but it still seems like a tedious exercise in button clicking. Hopefully NI will add some sort of feature that will update NA just like plugins get update automatically in every DAW.

Oh well, then, I was just in the first stage of planning all that. One step was going to check for compatibility for everything I have installed, so thanks for letting me know. I guess it'll have to wait.

Thanks Jeremy, I'll definitely watch it. But it seems to me that NA now has the ability to relocate all or at least several. I had to make a lot of space in my internal SSD where the NI libraries were installed, so I moved several NI libraries to an external SSD, then launched NA and it was showing me all the broken libraries, with a relocate all button:

Upon pressing it, I get this dialog:

Now, it's buggy, because when you press confirm the first time, it starts doing its thing, but comes back saying it couldn't find anything. I forgot to take a screenshot of that. But when you press confirm again, it does find the ones you moved:

However, it also shows me tons of other libraries that are not even Kontakt based. Native Instruments hates making windows that you can resize to see more things, but this will give you an idea of what they are:

While I have a couple of Spitfire libraries that are Kontakt based, those listed there are definitely not. And Ozone is not a library, it's a bundle of effects that are installed and working fine, I didn't move anything in the Ozone installation folder.

What's really confusing here is not just that, but that if you press Confirm again, it just keeps searching for the libs with broken paths. To close that dialog, you have to click cancel. This, however, will not undo the relocation of the libs it found earlier.

But hey, at least there's a way to relocate all or several libraries that works.

Nice find! And just in time for me as I am embarking on a new DAW build in the coming weeks and this will be a huge time saver. But - buggy as you have noted.

What version of NA is this available with? Because it must be VERY new.

Well, I have a lot of NI Kontakt based libraries, so I launch NA about twice a week to check for updates to those products. But if there's a new NA update, it will tell you right away, and you can choose to restart it and it will update before launching again. So if you want to make sure you have it, just load it, and it will tell you if your version is older.

Thanks, Jeremy, but I don't need to file a support ticket for this. At some point in the next few months I will be moving all my libraries to a backup drive, wipe the internal drive and install Sonoma, that is when it's fully compatible with all my libraries, a lot of which are NI, but many are not.

That's when I probably will file a ticket if things don't go smoothly.
