Creating User MIDI Template with S61 mk3 and Komplete Kontrol 3.0.0

I want to fully use the benefits of the new music creation ecosystem that NI is creating without always needing a piece of their hardware attached.

Understandable. I want my hardware not to be dependent on a piece of software to work properly.

So what's wrong with having MIDI template editing doable on BOTH the computer and on-device?
Let users have the choice of preferred method?
1 -
Sure, I wouldn’t mind that at all.

Question is... has NI made offering both methods more difficult to develop with their strategy with the new on-device CPU?
Has this "strategic dependence" created a slow-moving and more difficult process?

What?
How am I supposed to configure the output channel, range etc. of knobs, buttons and rename them, saving it as a preset?
For the keyboard's MIDI mode I used Bome's MTP with my Mk2, for the sole reason that there is no Image Line plugins in the NKS Standard cause reasons. And zero integration with FL Studio besides the transport controls, cause more reasons. So I had it all working "fine", after a lot of work. Spent a lot of money on this upgrade because a new version of something is supposed to be better, right?
A stupid blue circle around the 4D encoder that I can't turn off, and doesn't actually indicate anything, as per being a light on a parameter. Colours change option that doesn't change all the lights, only half of them, and can't be assigned to plugins. Aftertouch that most plugins don't support. A big screen that isn't utilized; they just blew up the same objects larger. Random crashes and having to reinstall the KK plugin because it refused to start for no reason. Random error messages about incompatible files. A browser that disappears when I choose a preset. A new NKS 2 standard that half the plugin companies haven't upgraded to so there is a mismash of random plugin usage on the screen. A dumbass usb c port with no adapter in the box. No Machine buttons. No master volume control. NI saying the FLS integration is going to be "basic" (you got to be kidding me. It's NOT THAT DIFFICULT! I'm a frikkin carpenter and even I can do it). And now no MIDI mode support? What?
I've really wasted my money. Should have just stuck with the mk2. I spent good money so I could have a downgrade. This is an example of shiny object syndrome.

And future proofed
1 -
Only within the confines of MIDI.
But what of future plans from NI itself?
What if competitive forces create expectations for features and a user experience not feasible within the confines of the on-device display and its navigation/selection controls?
Even something as simple as text input without a qwerty keyboard?
What if browsing via AI assisted text prompts becomes the expected norm?
This is the future.. and not so far away.

Indeed. @Matthew_NI , as we talk about the future, what about allowing a JPG or PNG picture background as a part of user midi template?
Right now, it’s just big black screen with a name of MIDI template (“Default Template” for now). Having a custom background would allow to quickly differentiate between setups and looked cool (for example project or artist logo, etc.)

What else is there, really?
MIDI is ubiquitous and works.
And what if, 5 years from now, NI would decide that KK is not their thing, after all, and retire it (happened before with Kore, so there is a precedent)?
If all functions are embedded within hardware, we will still have fully functioning controller and we won’t be in a situation KK1 users are right now.
In regards of your new favourite thing, AI: are you sure you have not been assimilated by it already? 🤣

At least in the first version of the MIDI template editing on-device, there won't be custom image loading as there will be no way to get images onto the device itself.
It's something to consider for the future, perhaps as part of the desktop integration / file handling of the templates (e.g. transferring them off of your device).

And right there... desktop app dependence to offer a better user experience.

The S-Mk3 hardware is beautiful and of excellent build quality.
But if it is possible to shift the NI strategy in the relationship between this hardware and KK3 desktop software, I'd suggest giving this a big re-think.
Currently, it feels like the tail is still trying to wag the dog.

Well, those backgrounds won’t magically appear on a keyboard, they have to be loaded from somewhere 🤣

Well, the trend seems to be other way round. Arturia, Novation and M-Audio have a lot of performance functionality on device nowadays (scales, chords, arp, midi template editing). Akai has the whole Linux computer built-in in their MPK series, same with Ableton Push.
I think NI’s tail is wagging the right way 😜
