I've seen conflicting advice — that only the 18W adapter should be used, but also that the 40W is recommended by NI to resellers as a spare part for the S49.

No problem to use higher wattage supply. On contrary lower wattage could be problem (depending how much lower it is to desired one...).
What is important is polarity (where + and - are) and voltage (how many Volts - V).
