As mentioned here https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/209582749-Setting-up-Your-MASCHINE-Controller-for-Host-Transport-Control-in-Logic-Pro "Logic Pro is automatically configured for advanced integration with MASCHINE MK3". Does the same apply to Maschine Plus? I haven't found a way that Logic recognises Maschine Plus as a controller. Is the only way to set it up with the Mackie template in Controller Editor?

No, it does not apply. Maschine Plus never got the "DAW Control" feature that the MK3 has; quite odd since it's basically the same physical controller.

Yes, the only way is to set it up as a Mackie controller... Mackie actually has way more features than "DAW Control", it's just 10x uglier and you don't get the fancy volume meter visual feedback from the DAW.
