'KOMPLETE KONTROL A25 MIDI (Emulated)' vs. 'Komplete Kontrol A DAW (Emulated)' in Pro Tools

Windows 11 Home, Pro Tools Intro 2024.10, Komplete Kontrol 3.5.0 (KK)

I watched a video from NI re: KK MIDI Controller in Pro Tools from the menu Setup > Peripherals > MIDI Controllers he chose 'Komplete Kontrol' as the Type and 'Receive From' and 'Send To' automatically populated (the same process in the A series User Manual on page 16 chapter 4.3.3). However, when I chose KK under Type both those boxes still showed 'none'. I had 2 choices under Predefined > 'KOMPLETE KONTROL A25 MIDI (Emulated)' or 'Komplete Kontrol A DAW (Emulated)'. I tried every combo. I check under Setup > MIDI > MIDI Input Devices and both of these are enabled.

The only options that allow MIDI playback without an error seem to be KK A DAW Emulation for both slots. Idk if this is relevant but 'Send To' also lists 'Microsoft ****** Wavetable Synth' and 'Microsoft MIDI Mapper' along with the other two.

Did I miss a step that would cause these fields to auto-populate? Seems like I turned plug & play into plug and tinker!

If it helps, I also see both these options in the I/O menu in the KK standalone app Preferences.

    Hello,

the midi port is for the keyboard playing and controlling instruments basically so this should go to your Instrument and midi tracks, the port with "daw" in the name is for the daw Integration to control the daw, transport and navigation. So you have to choose the daw port in this situation.

@Uwe303 TY for the tip. It tracks that you would use the DAW port for Receive/Send from inside the DAW. I suppose it seems obvious🤦🏻Re: "the midi port is for the keyboard playing and controlling instruments basically so this should go to your Instrument and midi tracks". Idk where I would enable the options that wold satisfy this condition. I'm certain it's my inexperience, but can you clarify what you mean?

For context, right now both of the devices are checked under MIDI Devices in Pro Tools, but I have used the KK A DAW Emulated for both Receive and Send. Seems to work so far…

If everything works then it's maybe setup automatically, on other daws you have to set also the other (non DAW port) so it's routed to your instrument tracks and midi tracks to record your keyboard performance. Found this but they also don't mention that part:

P.S. what I mean is under the "midi input devices" setup page I guess but, like I said, if everything works there is no need to look into that

@Uwe303 That's the video to which I was referring! Watching again I can see that although his procedure was automated, it was the DAW version on both Receive and Send.

I think I see what you mean re: the instrument/MIDI tracks; there's an I/O for each track so e.g. the audio track might be recording guitar from your interface as an input, whereas the [virtual] instrument track would be receiving MIDI data from the A25 as an input. I did not change the input from no input, nor do I remember seeing the A25 available but I'm away from my rig at the moment. In addition to the MIDI Devices menu, there's also an 'I/O' menu under Peripherals, which again I can't confirm until I can plug in the A25 again to see if it appears there as well. I'll circle back with the answers…

P.S. Both the A25 and the DAW are also in the MIDI I/O in Komplete Kontrol standalone. Much like above, I presume I should choose the A25 as the input device here… the output has this and the MS Wavetable Synth (still a mystery) again but the output does not seem to matter (more speculation on my part.)

The MS Synth is a synth on your soundcard and you don't need that, also the output back to the a25 you normally don't need, only if you make your own midi presets with pots in relative mode but on your case you can leave that off too for the non DAW port.
