Possible to reconfigure X1 MK1 to Midi mode with Z1 MK2 for IPAD M1??

Hello all, I am planning on getting a Z1 MK2 as it’s on sale at the moment. I do however have the following gear in my disposal. 2 X1 MK1s, F1, and a Z2 Mixer. I would like to make my current setup as portable as possible and power off the USB for beach parties. I have plan with running the X1 MK1 (in MIDI Mode) with Z2 MK2 with an IPAD air M1 Tablet. Playing thru a Portable PA with RCA input. Understand that I will need a USB C hub with a USB C and a USB A port to connect. Is there a tutorial on how to reprogram the MIDI with the X1 MK1 for my use case? Remember, the software I will be running is Traktor DJ 2.0 with the latest iOS on a iPAD air M1. TIA!!

You wrote z2 in the text, but I assume you mean z1 mk2.

Z1 mk2 will not work on Traktor DJ 2. The software is dead and has not been updated in years. It also does not support x1 mk3. Not sure about x1 mk1 .. I doubt it. It also does not support midi mapping.

Get Djay Pro with a compatible controller if you want to DJs from iOS.

The discourse is even more general: none of those devices are class compliant, so they will not work with iPad (they need the drivers which cannot be installed on iPad).

Even about midi mode: X1 (or F1 or Z1) can be used in midi mode only when plugged to a computer (like almost every devices from NI except the keyboards, which also can be used only on some aspects).

The only thing that could work (but I’m not sure) is the audio interface part of the Z2 mixer (only the audio interface), in the same way Maschine internal audio interface can be used with an iPad (but not the controller per se). But, as said, not even too sure about this.

In the past NI allowed to use the first batch of Z1 MK1 with the iPad. They already removed the complete integration with second batch of MK1, which could be used only on one of the aspects (if I recall correctly it was the audio interface but not the midi, but my memory could fail and I don’t have a MK1 second batch to test it. Since I was so lucky to buy my MK1 at release, I stuck with this so that I can use it with the iPad.

You can find here in the forum some threads where I tested all of this for other users.

Even the “working” Z1 MK1 first batch had problems if used with an usb c ipad. Only with lightning’s ones both aspects were working (audio interface and midi, therefore faders and buttons).

All of this to say: if you want to use an iPad, probably NI is not the right road…

    h ttps://developer.apple.com/documentation/driverkit/creating-drivers-for-ipados

(delete the space between the h and the ttps… I can't add links yet.

Anyways Lostinfoundation is correct. NI seems not interested even it could be just a firmware update with class compliant feature and the new controllers (and maybe some old) could get iPad support.

Better wait to mixing OSes in Apple field as some users usually point. Meanwhile better looking elsewhere…

Oh…yeah… I forgot the S2 and S4 working with iPad, hoping they don’t have the same issues as Z1 MK1 where usb c port broke what was working with lightning (strangely)

About second link: I think the created drivers must be embedded in the app by the developer. Or do you know some way to install them “separately” by the users?

Well it was like that with the mfi (made for iPad) label at products which means also a fee to Apple to “complain” that policy but the DriverKit Api is the equivalent to macOS so it shoud be possible to “install” drivers in the future (if not in the actual iPad pros… I’m still at mini4 :( ) like regular computers. It’s also a Api to help developers/brands to code drivers for arMacs with Apple silicon AFAI understand…

Thanks. Still not sure it will be doable like on regular computers.

Till now, as said, the “drivers” should be embedded in the app by the developer

Btw: I’m on iPad Pro, but never heard of something like “drivers self installation”

It seems possible from iPadOS 16 and beyond and the procedure seems like an app installation deploying the driver into the system but only activated when you plug the device so it seems an extension to just the regular class compliant by-default core system audiomidi.

Not sure if someone implemented it but at that last link it talks even about HID devices so NI fall inside that category.
