Hi I am hapclem, newbie here, from Australia. I see the problems some of you are experiencing with your keyboards. Some solutions have worked as I noted, especially the Apple charger one. Here’s my two cents take on the matter. I am from a background in electronics. Not that it matters any. USB comes in many flavours. Especially the newer USB-C which can handle voltage 5V up to 48V and powers of 5W upwards of 240W. Then the cables have to be power rated for such high loads. Like the cable for a rear dashcam is much thicker than the front camera having to carry heavier currents over longer distances. Here’s what AI search reveals:

    USB Power Delivery (PD):

    • Standard: A fast-charging standard developed by the USB-IF Association, used with USB-C ports.
    • Maximum Power: Can deliver up to 100W of power. (even up to 240W now possible)
    • Voltage: Supports multiple voltage levels (5V, 9V, 15V, 20V, 28V, 36V, and 48V).
    • Compatibility: Quick Charge 4.0 is designed to be compatible with USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), allowing it to also support USB-PD power levels.

I believe Powered HUBS may not be necessary as long as you use a separate USB-C with Power Delivery being delivered using a high power USB-C cable(much thicker). That is the reason Apple USC-C charger works. I can use my Lenovo laptop charger ($30-50 on eBay) to safely charge a USB-C smartphone because the charger delivers the right amount of current and voltage to the phone or any other device as required, no more no less. Most ordinary USB-C power supplies and computers cannot deliver such intelligent high power requirements.

Here’s a tester you might consider having which will give you the information about your devices power supply requirements. It’s USB-C male one end and USB-C female on the other, so it fits between the power supply and your device.

Type-C Multi-function Digital Display DC Voltage Ammeter Power Meter DC 4-30V 12A Tester.

Look for KWS-2302C on AliExpress or Amazon. About $15-20 AUD.

Hopefully this is helpful. Cheers 😀

Thank you very much for your contribution.

I would just like to add that the suggested use of the USB-C hub is mainly for off setting the problems that exists with some USB chips set implementation driving some USB-C port communication :

    Quote Matthew_NI, Product Team, October 1 :

    Problem:

Some computer chip sets made between2020 and 2023 have a known USB-C error that can't be fixed. This can cause sporadic problems with USB-C peripherals like the Kontrol S MK3, including connection failures, freezing, or issues with firmware updates.

    Solution:

If you experience these issues, try using a USB-C hub between your Kontrol S MK3 and your computer. This can help avoid the problem and ensure a stable connection. This is critically important during firmware updates, as data loss could cause broken firmware. Make sure the hub supports both power and data transfer.

Hi Jono Rezzillo (John Russell), I feel your frustration and pain. Your firmware update has not gone well at all and you don’t need me to tell you that. The NI Team really should help you with resetting your keyboard if at all possible.
I would try a more powerful USB-C wall power supply with thicker USB-C cable. The failed update has most likely bricked the keyboard. It is the very reason a PC or Mac will warn us not to shut down our computers while in the middle of an update. Being a brand new keyboard it would still be under warranty. If there’s no help forthcoming, like yourself I would be thinking of returning it. Please do keep us posted how you get on.

    Hi please accept my apologies.
I acknowledge my rashness in dismissing the use of the USB-C hub and respectfully stand corrected on the point presented by Matthew_NI. Indeed I will follow his advice on using a USB-C hub as per his solution. Cheers :)
