KK keyboard midi problem with interface

I have a problem that I initially thought lived in my Moog Voyager hardware synth but I'm now thinking it might be a MIDI problem. It is connected via MIDI to my Komplete Kontrol keyboard via a Unitor MIDI interface. I usually play the Moog and record its MIDI out in Logic, which in turn sends MIDI to the Moog so I can hear it back and later record it as audio.

The symptom of my problem is that the Moog's knobs when I turn them increment in 4, not 1. The smallest turn should advance the numbers by 1, but instead it goes up and down in 4. This is especially annoying to the ear, as the tuning of oscillators is too coarse and the cutoff filter steps instead of sweeping smoothly up and down.

This problem goes away if I turn off the Komplete Kontrol keyboard. But I do need the KK, so I need to know how to fix this.

Another thing happens randomly: a new MIDI region has ctrl 21 in its event list. It would be that I didn't send out ctrl 21, it would just appear.

Anyone any ideas?

Logic version: 11.0.1

Mac OS Sonoma

Hi Jeremy, I think it might have something to do with MIDI feeding back when I have the Moog in Local ON. Turning it off smooths the knob behaviour. I haven't been able to trigger the CC21 thing. Fingers crossed that's all it was.

Which version of the Komplete Kontrol keyboard is it? Mk2? Mk3?

Have you tried to control the Voyager directly from the Komplete Kontrol keyboard? Do you experience the same issue?

You mention some CC21 information being sent out. We might be on to something here. Please check if there are unwanted MIDI assignments, with the keyboard connected AND with the keyboard disconnected. All of this is pretty different depending on the generation of the keyboard. For MK2 it's all in the software MIDI settings, for the MK3 it's partly on the keyboard itself so if you let us know it'll be easier to give you the correct information.

    Hi Jeremy, S88 Mk 2.

I haven't tried connecting directly, as I don't want to work that way. I have a Prophet 6 connected via the same interface to the S88 , same as the Moog and I don't get the same stepping.

Is there some kind of looping happening?

I understand that you don't want to work that way, I'm just asking this for troubleshooting purposes. Unfortunately I don't have a Moog Voyager or a Prophet 6 to test and I don't think I can request one of those to my superiors to do a repro (I wish I could!).

By connecting the keyboard directly that would tell us if the issue is with Komplete Kontrol or some Logic unwanted setting (this happens a lot).

If it happens only with the Voyager, is it the same knob as for the Prophet 6, the same MIDI channel? Which knob is it? Have you tried to assign a different knob?

You mention this CC21, that could indicate a wrong or unwanted MIDI assignment. For a MK2 you'll need to check this in the Komplete Kontrol standalone application.

Open the standalone Komplete Kontrol app, with the keyboard connected, look for unwanted MIDI assignments or double assignments for CC21 or other CC duplicatess you are using for your synths, check in knobs, buttons, touch strip, pedals, etc…

Do the same with the keyboard disconnected, remove any MIDI assignment there:

Hoping that helps, let me know how this goes.

Thanks, Jeremy. I'll try connecting the S88 to the Voyager. Before I do, worth mentioning that CC21 appears sometimes in the event list without my laying hands on the S88, seemingly auto-generated. The knobs affected are Cutoff, OSC frequency…there may be others but they're the obvious ones.

That's interesting. Is there a MIDI assignment to the touchstrip?

The strip next to the pitch and mod wheels of the S88 is assigned (default?) to MIDI volume (not CC7).

Ok and no other assignments of CC21 on a knob, pedal, button?

No. This happens randomly, not every time. I'm away from the gear at the moment. I'll feed back asap.
