Abbey Road Drummer (60's) & Kontakt 7 Multi Output set up....help

Hello everyone,

I am trying to set up the multi outputs for each individual drum into Logic Pro X from Abbey Road 60's drummer, but it doesn't seem to be working for me. I have read and watched as much as possible on the set up of this but I am stuck trying to get it to work. I can add the 16 (or 8x8) get some output but just get MAIN and OH & ROOM mics on separate channels.

Some suggest 16xstereo, then there's 8 & 8 (stereo & mono) neither I try works.

Q1: why the difference between the 16stereo and 8x8 with mono - which is to be used?

Q2: Could someone please explain how to actually route the drums through the multi outs and have them separated (and usable) in Logic Pro X?

Sorry if such a newbie question but am truly stuck and can't find the info to explain it to me (or I just can't understand it - use crayons if needed to explain)

Hello,

what output config you use is up to you really, i just use all stereo outputs cause it works for all stuff. Lets say you want to make it "perfect" for 60ies drummer, it has just one stereo out, the st overhead, all other tracks are mono. You would have to create the amount of mono tracks + the one stereo, this is of course possible by manually doing it but in my opinion not necessary.

So if you go to the mixer page you should see a settings tab button left from the eq tab button, this leads you to the tab where you can set the output as you like it.

P.S. after using the batch setup in kontakt you have to unload the instance and reload it into that track or something like that, in order to make the changes happen, i just use 16 stereo outs for everything and set it as default for all instances, then in cubase i can set the channels as i need them

Thank you for your reply, I think I was being pedantic about the mono channels, would just like it to work.

I tried as you've directed but still having problems.

I've assigned all drums to their relevant channel in Kontakt:

Then on playback it's showing levels in Kontakt player - outputs:

Note KICK is playback for all drums - sounds more like a room mic

And in Logic here are the track meters - again KICK ch plays all drums

Not sure if they'll help - as different DAW (but premise should be the same, no?)

Anyway hope you can help.

Also wasn't sure what the batch setup was - did see Presets/Batch congfig - so clicked on the 'Rename….' option. I also saved it as a preset and then saved for 'All Formats'.

Please let me know if I did something wrong.

Thanks for your reply. Think I was just being a little too focused on 'Abbey Road 60's' so thank you I just working at this stage. So went with the 16 stereo option instead, unfortunately it doesn't seem to have worked out either.

I did the Kontatk multi out creation and drum assign:

Then on playback I get this in Kontakt (kick and snare seem to both trigger in KICK channel):

And in Logic mixer window - after the set up of 16 channels. Here although the right output is displayed the drums are not assigned as detailed in Kontakt:

I'm not exactly sure what batch set up is in Kontakt but saved it as the Kontakt default and then upon adding Drummer I saved this as a preset. Removed the plugin, created a new track and opened Kontakt and recalled the preset.

Did I miss a step?

batch setup simply means that kontakt is making the setup for you with the outputs so you don´t have to do it manually, what you can if you wish, say one stereo out and ten mono outs.

i guess you have not routed everything to its own output, you need to do that for the overheads and room mics too or at least mute them, otherwise they will go over 1/2 with the kick, for the early full kit you need 10 outputs for example if you want to route everything out. And on your picture i see 1/2 used two times used as output. If i use the batch preset "16 stereo out" that doesn´t happen it counts - 1/2; 3/4 and so on

I tried a bit more, and i tried to use a snapshot to not have to route all drums to the outputs again, but it didn´t worked after loading the snapshot the routing was gone and no matter what i have done, everything was going through 1/2 and no meters moving within kontakt anymore but the sound was there. But if you load the kit again everything works again and you can route the drums to every output.

Uwe, thank you so much it really helped though I don't how I managed to get the double 1/2 channels.

And you were right I hadn't routed it properly - it seems the Reverb ch also comes through on the Master ch which is St 1 which has the reverb for every channel coming through, I don't know how I messed up the rest mind but got there. I'll just put what I did if it can help the next person looking so thanks again!

The fix for me was:

Logic Pro: Add new track and load Kontakt as 16 Stereo.

Kontakt: Press View and select Outputs, now click Presets/Batch and select Factory - 16 Stereo. Rename (pic) and save as current output for All Formats. Open Abbey Road Drums (60's), open Mixer, select Settings and assign each drum, mic and the reverb to relevant outputs - press exclamation mark if output names do not sync initially. Mute Clap & Tamb (unless you want to assign them) also Reverb if desired. Pull all channel levels up to zero. Set all Pan knobs to middle.

Back to Logic, go to Mixer window and press + on track, add 9 aux tracks, rename in same order as Kontakt Output (pic). Select all new 9 aux tracks, right click and create track (this now puts tracks in Arrange window).

Things should all be separated now, put them all in a summing stack and should be good to go.

One little problem…..the volume is about 10db lower than if you have a stereo track playing the same, so I put a gain plugin (just to even hear it) whacked it up 10db, not sure if this would impact on a mix at this point but does anyone know a work around or why that would be so different in volume?

the sum of some instruments can be louder so it is normal that if you output a mix the mix is louder than any of the single tracks but i will check if there is a difference with the single tracks, i want to investigate the preset issue anyway i described above

Ok yeah but this was all the single instruments playing as one a/b the stereo version, just seemed like a big difference 10db - however as I since also increased the send on the Master (not sure if I did it last time - had to restart due to problem with summing tracks), it all seems to be loud now - I will replicate what I did to see where the issue was - so thanks again Uwe mate!

Yeah the issue you described seemed odd, I did encounter a problem with no sound or meters until reloaded Kontakt, probably not the same issue, let me know if you find a fix just incase I run into that problem
