Kontrol Mk3 S-Series, How to set MIDI output channel?

Seems we're totally missing some core MIDI controller functionality here, how do I set the Kontrol keyboard's MIDI output channel? I see options for the touch strip and, pedals, wheels, but not the keybed itself? uh...

I see no option in MIDI settings to change it, seems to default to Channel 1. So, if I have multiple channels in Ableton each with different instruments (some NI and some not), each of them having a dedicated MIDI input channel set, there seems to be no way to control any of these channels other than the one set to MIDI channel 1.

Am I hallucinating?? :(

Nope, not hallucinating. They shipped it this way. No midi templates or way to edit. Pretty awesome, ain’t it.

Yeah, this on top of everything else shouldn't be surprised, I guess. But I have to admit it's really hard to sit here looking at this thing as my primary controller and knowing how completely limited it is currently and how much I paid for it and how sad of a release this whole thing was, and... and.... I guess it was my fault to expect at least basic MIDI controller support on a flagship MIDI controller from the start eh?

Looks like according to their roadmap MIDI templates should be coming by summer... Must be one hell of a dev team to be taking this long for seemingly trivial "standard" MIDI controller functionality... haha :(

You hit the nail exactly on the head wrt the dev team. It seems no thought went into the MK3, and it was designed by people who never used the MK2. Either that or they are apathetic about the product being good. I haven’t given NI a dime since they got me with the MK3. We should have been told about the limitation upfront in all the marketing videos, but they never mentioned it once. I’ll stop short of saying deliberately, but it definitely felt that way. I am sure they don’t care because they make more money off of glorified sample libraries now so it is what it is.

That really sucks - it's now end July and still no sign of midi templates - just bought an S1 MK3 and its rendered it kompletly useless

Not true - there have been several posts from NI including @Matthew_NI stating that templates are in late beta and will be released in the next couple of weeks or even less if there are no major bugs in the next release candidate

Added to which, many people from this forum are participating in that beta, and providing valuable feedback!

This is great. Do you by chance know if the schema/spec for the json will be made available so us devs can write an editor? 😉

Or will there be one eventually from NI?

    Thanks Matthew!

    Have at it.

The MIDI Templates are saved as a fully open text file.

In fact, one of the team already threw together a guide on how to use a text editor to enjoy more special characters than the device itself has.

As such, what anyone so choose to build around the text file is their prerogative.

It is my view that the more open things can become, the better they will become together.

Note that we don't officially support this - rather, we saw no reason not to make it open, and thus we left it so.

I get all that. I very much appreciate that it is in an open standard format. It's in json format, which usually serialized to a schema/class, so knowing the schema is crucial to making a functional app that reads/writes it.

I can derive it from examples, was just curious if NI would provide any details around all possible values, etc.

Given that it's unofficial in that sense, no, but I'd be happy to explore and answer questions.

This overview may help - in terms of at least outlining in a single place the values that can be set and sent.
