No MIDI in Logic Pro with Maschine plug-in

I'm interested in taking my Maschine out of storage and using it in my studio. When I bought it the problem was that no MIDI information would appear from the Maschine Plug-In in Logic Pro. To reproduce the problem simply launch the Maschine plug-in and try to record some notes. Was this bug ever resolved? Getting some value from this purchase would be so great. Thanks.

AU plugins don't have MIDI Out, only AUv3 which only seems to be a thing in iPadOS/iOS, so... Not really a bug but nothing changed afaik.

The Maschine controller in MIDI Mode should work fine tho.

Thanks! I will definitely be avoiding the Maschine plug-in and hardware since, as you say, AU plug-ins don't have MIDI out. Does NI have any plans to support Logic Pro with Maschine at some point? All my other AU instruments do have MIDI out and work perfectly.

This is a Maschine issue not an AU issue. The VST version of the Maschine plug-in fails in Ableton in the same way: no MIDI notes are produced. To see this problem in Ableton just launch the Maschine plug-in, load a kit, then try to record something. It does not work.

YouTube shows various workarounds for this severe bug but it looks like NI never fixed it. The workarounds include dragging MIDI from within the Maschine window or routing of audio but the plug-in just doesn't work like a normal AU/VST instrument. Wish I knew all this before buying.

In MIDI mode, sadly, the kits functionality breaks--just one sample plays on all the pads at different pitches. But this does make the MIDI notes appear in Logic. What a nightmare.

In this obscure but very helpful YouTube video NI shows the correct steps to make Maschine function like a regular instrument in your DAW. A few additional tweaks are needed but then it works. I wish this information had been included with the Maschine as I nearly got rid of it.

Once in MIDI mode you can restore the nice colors using Controller Editor and pick out your own color scheme.

Again, it has nothing to do with NI/Maschine, it's a limitation of Logic/AU... VST's send MIDI out just fine in all other DAW's like Ableton, Cubase, Studio One, etc...

What instruments you have that have MIDI Out??? Midi out from plugins means the plugin it self sends MIDI to other channels, completely unrelated to MIDI Controllers of any kind.

VST works fine for me, has been for a decade, there's tons of videos on it... But, you have to know how to route MIDI, the DAW and Maschine cant guess what you want to do, you have to tell it and setup things...

Logic fans refuse to believe there are things logic is not a good fit for. But seriously, logic only allowing AUs is a PITA and is the sole reason why I never bought it

I think you must be misunderstanding. The MIDI out you are referring to is not what I am talking about. This is about just using Instrument plug-ins and the fact that out of the box the Maschine plug-in produces no MIDI notes in any DAW. Using the instructions shown by NI this out-of-box failure to function properly can be overcome.

Logic is as good a fit as any other DAW for using Maschine. Fixing this issue in Logic also solved it in Ableton and other DAWs on my computer. Before this change none of them were working.

I'm quite certain Maschine software is not AUv3, though 🤣

However, I have Novation Launchkey Mk3, I open Maschine plugin on a software instrument track, load any drum kit, play and record drums from my MIDI keyboard. I guess the workflow should be the same with Maschine controller in MIDI mode, or am I missing something?

Oh yes, to do that, and to prevent Maschine playing one drum sample only, with various pitches across the pads, one has to switch (I think, as I did it only once and saved Logic template with Maschine plugin correctly configured in it) group midi input Key Mode to “Drumkit”, it is described on page 312 (or Section 10.2.1) of Maschine software manual

As the icing on the cake to solving this problem I just rainbow-ized my Maschine Mikro MK3 in MIDI mode using the Controller Editor. Have a nice day.

Correct, Machine is not AU V3. That's cool, but where are the AUv3 plugins for MacOS? Can you give an example of a few that actually benefit from MIDI Out? All I see online is for iPadOS or iOS.

Regardless if Logic users want MIDI out from Maschine then they should be asking NI for an AU v3 Version and that will not make Maschine automatically know how to send the MIDI Out or interpret the MIDI In, the user still has to configure things.

In MIDI mode it is, as Maschine becomes a generic MIDI controller like any other.

This removes most of the routing hassle but again, you still have to tell Maschine what to do with the input...

Maschine can't magically know if you want to control 1 Pad chromatically (instrument) or if you want to use different notes to trigger different Pads from external things like MIDI controllers/keyboards or a DAW Track.

You can't have the ability to choose what's best for your use case without... configuring it AKA telling it what you want to do. With choice cames configuration.

It's been a few month or so, since 10.8.1 - give it some time, mate. According to Apple, iPadOS and iOS AUv3 plugins will work in Logic on a Mac with M series processor, assuming that the vendor allows installation on a Mac (it's up to vendors to choose if they want to). They are being installed into applications folder and Logic sees them. They are called "Audio Units Extensions" on a Mac.

I know that, of course. But I think this was what the OP was actually asking for. At least, that's how I have understood him. Especially, that he mentions using Micro Mk3 in Midi Mode and Controller Editor.

Well, yeah but right now it's not a thing, tomorrow maybe, considering the amount of time it took developers to move to VST3 when VST2 is far more popular than AU I'd tame my expectations that every plug dev out there is going to carry over to AUv3 soon...

So, what matters is right now, AUv3 supports MIDI Out from plugins, but.. there are no plugins with AUv3 on MacOS. 🤷‍♂️

Well, he said "Maschine plug-in" in OP then moved on to MIDI Mode amongst other things...

To get MIDI Mode working just:

Enable DrumKit Mode in the Group in Maschine-Plug
Make sure to be in Page D on the default Controller Editor template (sends notes from C2 and up, using the Group Function on the controller works to change Pad Pages)
Press pads and record away...
