I don't see any "wider" perspective than the global ecosystems, thanks. I'm really not interested in opinions to the contrary, having studied the issue for decades and having a solid grasp on the science.

On the bright side, California just passed the best Right to Repair legislation in the country. This of course doesn't necessarily FORCE vendors to also continue updating software to support the OTHER profitable, ever-changing environmental (OS, etc) factors, so take heart. There is still wiggle room.

"If you accidentally upgrade beyond version 2.9, you can download the 2.9.4 installers below:"

Really? What a poor solution guys. I just hit "upgrade all" as usual and it cut support for my S61 without any warning or notice and has been a pain trying to find out why. Why wouldn't you have something like this?

"Warning, you have a Kontrol 61 connected to your system, 3.0.0 will not work with this hardware, are you sure you want to upgrade?"

Apple won't just let me install an iOS update on a iPhone if it's going to brick it. It also won't let me install a program on macOS that won't work with the current version.

To be clear - I don't have a problem with support for a product ending, that's life. But I do have a problem with not getting a warning when your product can tell which keyboard is connected.

This is a very good point. I too use "update all". Now THAT is broken for me, because I still have a MK1 kontrol. I almost hit "update all" just now, 2 minutes ago! NI needs to do better.

You may download older KK SW. The link is somewhere in this thread. And possibly also on NI legacy download page. Or will be one day....

I wish NI will change its mind and makes possible to run KK2 and KK3 on one computer. At least for few years. Say at least five.....

It is nice to say, you may use KK2 instead. And it would be just fine for those who have only KK Sxx MK1 and no other NI gear.... But there are also users that have Maschine or newer keys beside MK1....

And they are deemed to either stay on KK2 and have no updates for all NI gear, or have update for newer NI gear and use MK1 in MIDI mode.

The both options are far from acceptable.....

i understand your concerns, but it would also be a nice gesture to those of us that have been buying into your ecosystem for 10+ years.

To throw another two cents in the pile, I’m a mk1 user and I’m fine with this decision. I can’t upgrade to the mk3 yet (I’m waiting for support for custom MIDI templates, as I use those extensively), but it’s not like KK 2.9 will stop working when 3.0 is released. I’ll just keep using that until I’m ready to upgrade the hardware (or rather, until it’s ready for me).

Legacy software can’t be maintained forever. It becomes a huge drain on engineering resources. The equivalent of that in my line of work (web app development) is dropping support for older browsers. It has to be done. The whole platform (the technologies and the software built with them) is constantly evolving. Supporting old versions of Internet Explorer was an incredible burden. It was literally holding everything back for years, requiring complicated workarounds that created as many problems as they solved. It’s not developer laziness that drives companies to drop legacy software; it’s a desire to create next generation products with features that were simply impossible to build with the old tech.

But move from Internet Explorer to different web browser costs nothing, except of learning to use new browser.... Move from one HW to another costs. In case of KK S88 pretty much.... And beside that it is waste to ditch 5 years' old HW that works just fine.

I guess noone asks NI to support MK1 keyboards with new functions and so. Simple possibility to be able use MK1 with current capabilities and newer HW with updated ones would do.

If that may work in Traktor, why not in Komplete Kontrol and Maschine?

Quote (and also @BIF) : "I just hit "upgrade all" as usual and it cut support for my S61 without any warning or notice and has been a pain trying to find out why. Why wouldn't you have something like this?"

I approached Native Hayo (Hayo_NI) with a suggestion about something like that in a much wider sense. Without going into details then the gist of the answer were that NI were hiding unsupported products from Native Access, but I guess not in that sense or with respect to something like that. (or maybe Hayo misunderstood me).

Anyway, I agree , and actually why not ask @Matthew_NI and @Hayo_NI :

Why would you first EOL a product and tell people to stay on a certain version of the Native Access and other products and then leave the 'update all' to be able to screw up everything if the person is distracted for a moment and just makes one wrong click ? At least there ought to be an "Are you sure you want to update all (since you have a Sxx MK1 keyboard in your system)" rather than just update ! ?

Will the M32 be affected at all?

    No, as Matthew_NI said:

"To clarify: yes all other keyboards (Kontrol S MK2, Kontrol M32, and Kontrol A series) are supported in KK3. As explained in the FAQ, there are issues that affect Kontrol S MK1 that do not affect the other keyboards."

    (Source: https://community.native-instruments.com/discussion/comment/99561/#Comment_99561)

And like Kymeia said, the M32 is based on MK2 tech.

We may disagree on some details and nuance, but there is some truth to this.

It's why MK2, A and M were architected a little differently, and why MK3 is architected even more standalone in nature.

    Here we go...

With a closed ecosystem, this situation was predictible.

What a garbage for the planet.

It looks like the VST2 version still loads with version 2.9.4 after update to 3.0.0. Maybe it's possible to run them side by side anyway by using VST2 for the old version, would that have any unforeseen consequences?
